Acropora spathulata experiences?

Me too!. It could be that they will fatten up though?"¦. i.e. elongate before they bulk up.

Or it might be a mille! :lmao:. Great colour for a mille though?!, but it doesn't have mille polyps!.

Generally corals grow thicker branches do deal with heavy turbulent flow conditions and pounding waves.

Compare the branches and habitat of A. humilis, with that of A. exquisita.

Essentially if you want it to bulk up, give it a reason to bulk up; assuming that the coral will do it of course.

Definitely a Spath. Above pic is the same coral. It came in with a slight tone of Green in the base on a wild Aussie shipment of Spath's!. I think it's the Purple/ Green version, but mine has turned almost all purple/ blue.

Top pic is about six weeks after intro. Bottom is a couple of months on.
It's in heavy indirect flow"¦ You can see it's leaning slightly in the direction of the flow!. It's about 18" down with 400W Reeflux 10K over it.

Do you have a Spath?. It would be good to see pics of how these are turning out.

Mo

That's awesome, especially it growing into the flow like that. I think I have two, either have yet to grow yet :( I will post pics of the new one since it has some color but is just a frag.
I have a 50 gal Rubbermaid with a bunch of thick branching corals with lots of light and random flow specifically set up to try and get corals like these to look as natural as possible. I would be upset (in my tank at least) with the growth pattern on your coral but the color blows that out of the water!! And it's still just getting started anyways and I am looking forward to updates! I have been having trouble finding pictures of thick nubby corals that are grown out in aquariums that look as natural as they do in the ocean. I am struggling a bit right now since I switched from one 400w to two 250 10k's, lots of stuff browned out but hopefully will recover soon!
I am still wondering how to best is this coral.

Moser,
I have it centered between 2 400w20k reeflux bulbs that are in lumenbrite reflectors + VHO atinic
10" from bulb to water line
and the coral is about 10" below the waterline

flow medium flow 2'away from a 6200tunze

mine is pictured on the right. peachy pink tips. gets a good amount of flow and light. one of my favorites.

Great stuff Tim. I really need to get up to your place and see your progress. The tank looks great!

Don't follow"¦ what are you implying is the reason to bulk up"¦ more flow???..

Lovely coral!. Nice tank!!.
Yours isn't growing so closely packed either, but nice two tone colour and rounded branches.

Good work

What's your lighting / filtration?

Here's one from my friend, Maurice....

Thanks for posting the pic Mo, thinking over what you said that they should be 'two' coloured with the base colour on the upper part and the green showing lower down on the coloalites, that is only due to the zooxanthellae not having caught up with the new growth. On sections where growth has stopped the Zooxanthellae will go all the way to the tip.

My colony is growing well from the bottom (can be seen by the purple only tips) as I have removed a few frags and this has prompted new growth. It appears to be growing to the same diameter as the original unlike your new growth.

Maurice.

Ya, essentially more flow=thicker branches.

Lack of flow is not my problem. Too much flow, possibly is…..

I have 7 MP60's, 4 Tunze 6305's and a 60000GPH Triton Propellor pump.
I have 2 6500 GPH Abyzz return pumps. It keeps detritus in suspension, thats for sure.

As the growth tips extend, they are moving in the direction of the flow, as you can see. I expect they will thicken up with time. Most of my corals have a tightly packed configuration, so I will watch this one and see how it goes.

Ok, ya you definitely aren't lacking flow. Tight colonies are indicative of adequate flow. We shall see, coral morphology is strange.

Bumpin this thread.

Anyone having luck getting these to color up and stay happy long term?

I just recently acquired a nice piece that arrived browned out. It seems happy with good PE so far, but no signs of coloring up yet. I have it fairly high up under 400w Radiums.

One of my favorite corals they always turn brown for me at first I have 5 diff colors all slowly changing colors not have that glo as much but still nice
