Adam's 450 GALLON REEF TANK BUILD!

I got the lights temporarily up. I used ATI fiji purple plus for actinics and they aren't as blue as I thought they would be. I don't have the adapter cords for my ice cap ballasts yet so I only have one metal halide on. I had 3 ice caps but this fixture has 4 MH so I got one Aqua Medic ballast which is a bit loud. Check out the pics.

That picture is T5's only! Here's a pic with 1 halide on. The bulb is too bright and too white for my taste. I like a dark blue tank. Hopefully with the ice cap ballasts the bulb will be under driven which I know isn't good as far as PAR goes but it should dim and blue the light more.

That first picture was t5 only???? Wow that's a lot of light. How many t5's in each fixture?

2 t5's in each fixture. Each fixture is 36" long. I'm waiting for adapter cables to come in so I can use the ice caps. Ad soon as they do I'll post pics with the 4 mh on. I am going to raise the lights though because they are strong and the tank is only 25" high.

The system is almost 100% complete and I have begun testing throughout the cycle. As far as the setup goes I am pretty happy with how it turned out for the most part and how it's running. I still need to get my canopy and wood stand built for the tank. I also need to get the calcium reactor running and I am waiting for a solenoid and some RODI "Y" fittings to come in so I can get my water change making setup complete. Once I have a second solenoid and 2 Y's I would like to set up the rodi to feed my auto top off tank like it has been using a Buckeye High Low switch with a pressure float switch as a fail safe and at the same time be able to make water controlled by a timer or float switch as well.

Because of my ankle injury and not being able to move much I didn't do any of the plumbing on my manifold or any of the reactors that run on it. It was all done by an old friend who used to be a vendor. All I had to do is pay him and sit back and relax. Most of the plumbing was done with RO John Guest push fittings and valves to make adjustment and maintenance very simple. Everything is unioned and easy to remove and swap out if needed and also setup on my controller. Everything is basically fully automated. I don't have to monitor top off water or anything of that nature. All I need to do is basic maintenance which is still a hand full. I am also going to get a neck cleaner for the skimmer so I can cut out that chore. Here are the pictures.

Thanks. I want to tidy up the wires a little more. I never focused on that before but I find that it makes things easier that's also why I labeled things. Steve you are welcomed in my house any time just let me know when.

What's the heating method of choice on larger tank? I have 2 300 watt eheim jagr heaters controlled by the apex but my temp still had large swings. Should I just add a 3rd heater maybe 600 watts is not enough. I was lioking at the jbj true temp titanium heating system. I want the 1000 watt but after some quick research here on RC it seems that they fail often. My heaters arw right near each other. Could it be that they are getting a temo reading off each other and the internal thermostats are shutting them down? Or again is 600 watts just not enough. They are in the basement which is cooler then the rest of the house.

Im using a 1000w titanium heater on my system. I bought it used and its been running for a year now. I have a spare 500w on the shelf incase the 1000w fails.

its a pro heat II 1000w heater with controller...but I just googled it and looks like its no longer available. how are you controlling the temp setting with them? are you using the apex for it?

Yeah Apex. The thing is they have built in thermostats too. They are both on top of each other between baffles in the sump. Do you think it's possible they are getting readings from each other and shutting down internally even though the apex has them on?

I'm thinking of a Ranco controller wi 2 500 watt coralvue titanium heaters. What do you think? I can always use the other 2 heaters for water changes and to keep the top off reservoir heated since the basement is cold!

I figured out the issue. Only one heater works! I got them a month ago. I wonder if premium aquatics will ate it back or if I have to send it to Eheim. Either way I'm going to get a Ranco with two metal heaters and keep these as spares..

Yeah I don't like the glass heaters they seem to fail pretty easily. All of my other heaters that I use for my mixing tank, rock bins and frag tank are finnex titanium heaters. I've never had a problem with them.
