So just got a powder brown on tuesday, it's been doing fine eating 50/50 plus and nori. Woke up today checked on the qt everything fine tang swimming around like normal then started doing daily tests on the display, went back to the qt about 20 minutes later and the tang is on its side breathing rapidly no signs of disease colors all still look good, now its just kinda swimming in bursts bumping into things then drifting back to the bottom. FML:worried2::worried::sad2:
 
everything else in the qt are fine. I ran some tests and the only thing I even got above a zero were the nitrates 10-15. I t could have been a little more than 20 minutes but not much
 
That's terrible, so sorry about the loss! And what adds to it is the fact that you may never know what really happened. I hope the LFS where you got it will help you out.
 
Im gonna call and bring a sample of water but not knowing the cause I feel mixed on the subject, yeah another fish would be nice but apparently im just going to kill it so whats the point.

Do you know if it was a Acanthurus japonicus or a Acanthurus nigricans. I have done a lot of research and the Acanthurus japonicus is a much hardier species. The Acanthurus nigricans rarely survives. Both are sold under the name Powder Brown. I have learned to try to use the scientific name to ensure I get the right thing. Although some LFS still do not get it right.

Ill ask the LFS. The tang came from a very trusted and valuable member of the RC community and were working on what went wrong.
In the mean time are there any subtle differences between the two that I might be able to look for?
 
Hmmm I do not believe it to be nitrates fish can tolerate higher nitrates than that I believe.
As far as stray voltage I would think the other fish in your qt would be effected also?
behavior that your describing makes me think of flukes? But again it could have been anything? Acclimation,stress,?
Anycase sorry to hear.
 
wow...i feel your pain, though. I always go through an initial apprehension of moving a fish from one environment to another...this is probably a total noob question, but did you check the salinity of the water the fish came in with the salinity of the water you put the fish into? I under acclimated a fish once and the behavior was similar and didn't happen immediately...
 
damn sorry to hear..those damn powder tangs..I wonder out of all those collected in the wild even survive 6 months in captivity ?
 
Kat, the salinity in bag was 1.020 and my qt is 1.015. I acclimated in the bag for over an hour using the drip method until the sg was equal in both, then floated for an additional 10 in the qt just to be sure the temp was right. The LFS requested the fish be frozen and brought to them to be studied and they are graciously going to take care of me. Im not going to drop the name of the LFS but this one is top notch IMO.

Think Im done with the powders! Gonna maybe try the yellow eye Kole when I figure out where this went wrong.
 
Sorry to hear about your loss.. Powder Browns and Powder Blues are very sensitive fish it may have just been over stressed being in qt.
