Advice?

I personally like the old school straight tube snorkels better than the newer purge valve ones, because they usually fail after a while and can be a bummer when they do.
But maybe for a first timer not used to clearing, and if you aren't planning on going regularly I guess ok, but often long term storage dries them out.
If you are checking snorkels, you might as well check masks too.
You don't have to get an expensive one to get a good fit, and for me a good fitting mask can make or break a dive.

Yes it is a pain to have to constantly purge your mask. It becomes second nature after a while but still . . .

^^ Yeah that can be real intimidating or frustrating to a new diver.
I have a goatee so I'm used to constantly purging a little, but I've been doing this a while now.

So after all this, I didn't end up doing much of anything. My wife is freaked out by fish (except when they're dinner) and after seeing the first one that was over 6 inches long, she decided she wanted to get out of the water, and stick to the resort's pool. So much for that.

LOL Now that's funny.

She decided to try fishing, since I told her you don't have to touch the fish. I love fishing, but she's never done it before. I baited her hook for her. Before I could even finish baiting my hook, boom! She has a bite, and reels it in. So I bait my hook, she takes my rod, and I have to get the fish off of hers. You wouldn't believe it - she catches another one before I finish baiting it again. I told her to stop fishing so I could actually get my line in the water.

We each caught 3 fish within half an hour. Not bad.

i was not at all nervous the first time i went scuba diving, until i was about to get into the water. the goggles can be very claustraphobic. the thing you want to resally get down is how to clear your mask of water. and how to equalize the pressure by blowning out while plugging your nose.
