AEFW Chronicle

Sorry to hear about your loss. Just moving corals can cause RTN to occur, and you've moved them out of their home to different flow, different neighbors, handling, dips, temperature variances, lack of power, different lighting (PAR to where they are now), etc...

This thread is a good idea. Keep up the good work.

Well, dip number four is completed and I have some good news!! I found zero flat worms (at least not large enough to see with the magnifying glass) and only two really small sacs of eggs during the dip. I did frag off pieces of two of the corals and threw the bases away to be safe. It feels like I am actually making some progress now!

Keep your chin up; this to shall pass. I hate that it had to happen to you, but I'm also glad that you're documenting your progress for everyone else to learn from.

I just finished my fifth dip. I have both good and bad news. The good news is that I was not able to see any worms from the dips. The bad news is that I discovered eggs on two of the frags.

Here is a picture of the eggs on one of the frags:

Here is a picture of the frag itself:

The frag above was a nice blue tenius. It has browned out since being placed in the QT. I ended up throwing it away because of the number of eggs on it today. :( My yellow tort was the other acro that I found eggs on. I simply trimmed the part off that had the eggs and saved this coral (for now).

I have learned that the worms do not just lay the eggs at the base of the coral, they also lay them on dead portions of acros. All of the eggs I have found recently have been located on the acro itself.

The stress on all the corals is becoming very apparent. I believe a couple more weeks and my losses will be substantial. The original plan was to only do one more dip, but since I located eggs today I will probably do at least two more.

Wow, that stinks. Do you think after all of this that you will have to change around your QT methods for future corals?

WOW, sorry to hear of the losses. I never had eggs near the tips but I guess I cut the dies parts off after each dip. LMK when your done I will set up a nice pack to sent your way.

Stinks you have been battling this for so long. You took a nice close up though. Did you ever get that medicine you were after? Or try a different method?

Yes, I will be using that QT for all incoming sps corals in the future Phil. The corals will be dipped and placed in the QT for at least two weeks. During the two weeks they will be dipped a couple more times and inspected. If any worms or eggs are located then will be thrown away.

I knew this was going to be a long process when I started (i.e. 6-7 weeks). I was hoping the worms/eggs would be cleaned up a lot sooner though and the last couple of dips would just be for extra good measure. I haven't been able to locate any Levamisole. I think this method will work I should have just been more aggressive throwing the problematic corals out early on.

Yeah, it's weird because initially I never noticed the eggs anywhere on the corals but at the base. The last two times dipping though I have noticed the eggs on the dead tips of the acros.

I will definitly take you up on that coral pack offer. You have some great looking pieces in your tank! I am really pumped to get to meet a few of you Michigan guys in January at the Lansing swap.

Great work David, I admire your patience with this. I would be really hard for some of us to do this at all, let alone be as persistent and thorough as you have been. Great work. Oh and let me know if you might want to car pool to the frag swap.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Mojo! You guys have been a key piece in helping me get through this bump in the road.

all else fails when all said and done maybe we can go together and and buy one heck of sps frag pack.

It should be a great time.

I just completed dip number six. Drum roll please.........it appears I am AEFW free!!! I found zero eggs and zero worms. My plan is to do one more dip a week from now just to make sure I didn't miss anything this week. If next week goes as well as this week's dip I will be moving my corals back into my display tank to make room for the frags I will be purchasing at the Lansing swap.

I did find something sort of weird while dipping so I thought I would post pictures.
