AI Hydra Settings Thread

This is not directly on-topic. Has anyone started to notice any longevity issues with their original Hydras? I have not *noticed* any, but after a couple of years I'm wondering at what point we should begin to be on the lookout for any "fading", etc. Again, I'm not noticing anything, but it would be hard to notice day-to-day.

The only thing I've had was a power supply that was noisy (buzzed a small bit), which was replaced under warranty. AI did not want the buzzing one back, so I have a "noisy standby" power supply.

Not yet, my oldest unit is just over 1 year in operation.

Having issues getting the used unit I picked up to upgrade the firmware. It is on version 1.39 and current is 1.44. I wonder if it is to many versions back for a clean upgrade. Have a service ticket in to AI.

haven't noticed fading but replaced pucks and driver boards on both my units after little over a year of use, then again pucks and board on one a couple of months later. See now have more LEDs not lighting up.

LEDs shouldn't fade, per se. I have been through many pucks, mother boards and more. Finally on a set that's lasted foe over a year. AI has stellar customer service!!

Any suggestions on how to get my unit to update? I had one response from AI and it was not helpful. Have responded with request for additional help and no response yet.

It sees the unit, but never gets off of 0% during the update process and crashes.

Can anyone post settings for a shallow tank?

I have a 36" x 36" x 12" mixed reef and everything looks dull until around 8pm with just moonlights.

Nstocks, maybe post the settings you are using, and someone can make a suggestion based off that.

Off the cuff, maybe increase blues or back off on whites and other channels during the day?

Also, in a tank only 12" deep, be careful. In my limited experience, a rather modest increase in power from this light can cause a large reaction from your corals (ie, easy to get too much).

Ok folks, just found something really cool that may help you. I am running the AI Prime, and have been using the iPhone app mostly for control. Recently, I began playing with the web interface, and have found some new added functionality, to include color temp settings!

First, a disclaimer. I am not an expert, in fact I'm a newbie. I don't work in the pet/aquarium/light industry. These settings are from the programming for the Prime, which may share some similarities with the Hydra series, or, may not. These settings may nuke your whole house.

When I switch control to manual, there's a little semi bullseye icon next to the sliders. If I click on that, it takes me to a screen where I can select the desired color temp and intensity by using just two sliders (one for temp, one for intensity)! How cool is that?

Now, please pardon the poor quality photos ahead, these are cell phone shots of my laptop screen, so they look funky.

Here is the screen where you can select color temp and intensity:

Now, I'll show you the settings (set by AI) for a range of color temps from 10k to 20k, all were done at 50% intensity. Here you go:

10k

12.5k

20k

Good luck!

That is FANTASTIC!!! Finally color settings and intensity! Now, to get it for us Director users. That would be super!! Maybe there's an update on the way???

Hope for an update so we can utilize these settings and features!!

Ok, now I've found something else, even better!

Using the web interface, I deleted my entire light schedule. Then, click on 8 am, bringing up the sliders. There's that little bullseye icon again! Ok, so I select 20k at 10% at 8 am. Move over to 6 pm, and set up 20k at 10% again. Then, at 1 pm, I set 10k at 30%, and the program drew linear curves for each channel between those selected points! Next, I added custom points at 5:30 am and 11:00 pm so I can have a little blue moonlight before sunrise and after sunset. All lights out from 11-5:30.

Nice!!!

That is not it, now I am getting aggravated.

What a pain, I decided to just plug it in to the router via either net cable. All better.

I have issue with wifi connections as well, but since I did the hardwiring with an Ethernet cable. All issues resolved!

Wazzel you ever get it to update? I know one of my Hydra replacement boards did that to me but i just kept on applying it, to me it seemed like it worked better when i updated it from my PC, I actually deleted it from the layout, rediscovered it and once it said needed update, it worked. I also want to say i may have moved the director closer to the light.

I don't see the bulls eye! Did you have to delete all your settings first?

Not yet, I had band practice last night so not much time to deal with. I think the director is to far from the light also. With my wifi issues it moved from 6 ft from the light in the same room to all the way across the house three rooms away. I am looking for a long cat 5 cable to move it as close as I can.

At least it is running on low power so my corals are getting some light.

ok, might be easier to just take the light to the director?

oh i have the hanging rack with the ext rails and it's just 1 bolt holding it in, well my end one's, i guess i got lucky and it was an end one...lol

I have the one with the legs, moving it will not be a problem. I was hoping wife could have found a cable at the house and move the director for me, but no luck. I am not going to ask her to move the lights and power supply and what not.
