AI Hydra Settings Thread

you can with just SPS it seems... i have my uv down to 15% and violet to 15 to see if my ACANS will come back, there puffing up a little today. we'll see i guess.

doesn't the Acan come from deeper waters (I think)
If so it would not be getting much white light spectrum in its normal environment. so it would stand to reason that it would not like the whites.

I see that a lot of people are running the CW leds pretty low. When i had my SOLs I would run the CW at 85% for at least half the day. My corals at the time loved them. Are the UV and Violet leds making it necessary to lower the CW???

Do you think that the Sol White LED is different from the Hydra's
Any one know?

@ 5" above the water you can probably turn your whites down to 20 or 25% and UV down to 15 or 20 % and get a nicer blue going. Personally i think the whites overpower the blues on the AI hydra and I wish there was a way i could order a puck with an extra blue led

I would personally like more purple, the color is not quite there relative to say an ATI fixture

Anyone want to buy two AI 52 fixtures for 850 i'll throw in the director for free, if one were to take both of them. Single fixture for 500. If interested pm me and we will iron out the details. Both work perfectly, I just don't think LED are for me quite yet.

Forgot to mention they're white.

AI Hydra Settings Thread

Just upgraded my sols. Starting out with the following. No clouds or anything yet. Want to see how my coral react to the same lighting schedule but different spectrum for a few weeks. Then I'll play with all the toys and start thinking about a uv peak mid day.

Be careful on the whites -I have seen some positive effects since I peaked my red, green and uv for 3 hours at mid day I peak my uv @ 70% red and green @15%
My biggest challenge is finding the right ballance with white.
Looking for feed back -how high and how long are you running White's

When I had my Sols runnning I had the RB 90, B 90, and CW 85 for more than half the day. I had Acans, Zoas, Acros, Montis, and Mushrooms. They all loved the light. Makes me wonder if the V and UV are impacting the CW for the corals.

Another thought that I am having... I see a lot of people leaving LEDS because of the lack of light on the undersides of some corals. On another thread, I am in the process of adding T5s to my Hydras... Perhaps it's simply not having enough LED fixtures for the light from the LEDs to spread out better... I have two Hydras running parallel with the front of the tank. Perhaps I need 4 Hydras running front to back to get the spread? It would be a lot of light but perhaps the spread would be better... what do you all think???

I was actually thinking of doing the same thing myself. but i had 3 running parallel then got the hanging frame kit to turn them perpendicular for more spread and still i have the underneaths of SPS dyeing off. but getting 3 more would be more then i wand to spend.

I had the same problem with my Acros... Yeah, for me it would be cheaper to add the retro fit T5s.

I have my V and UV down a lot. The UV was making my corals get darker cuz they put on natural sun block per se. Now they're coloring up again nicely. I'm not a fan of too much V (the color lol) or UV. Just my experience

I am not sure that any light will get to the undersides of corals. No light has the ability turn corners, except by reflection and I am sure that LED's reflect as well as any light.

I do have T-5's augmenting my 52's. One in the front and one in the back. I did it not for any coral benefit, but to improve, to my eye, the tank color. I am using blue plus bulbs.

The led light might not look bright they are just as bright as mh, adding t5s will help with spectrum. Once corals get acclimated leds produce very nice growth and colors.

Imo on a 6ft no less than 3 hydra
I would also like to ask fellow hydra owners to post white % and duration and if you have a peak %and duration

T5s do help since they are not a single point light source like leds. You get a lot less shadows with T5.

New to this thread but I've been reading along. I bought 2 hydras last month with the controller and mounted my lights about 12-13 inches above the water . I slowly acclimated my corals to the new leds and right now my %'s are Whites 55, blue at 60, violet and Uv at 40, red 15, green at 25. So far I've seen nothing but positive results. I have mostly all sps except for some Acans on the sand bed as well as some zooas. I do have some algae growing on the sand bed, but I had that before with my last set up wich was 2x 250 metal halides. Most of my sps are middle to top of a rock wall. I start my day cycle at 9 am with a 3 hour ramp with and set at 7. Clouds enabled with a 3x a day at 30% chance. Just saying my sps are exploding with new growth. So far I'm very happy
