Algae Scrubber Basics

With screens of the same size, would you say that a waterfall is generally more effective than UAS because it can easily be lit from both sides?

Unless you make a box like Floyd shows in his pics, that is one challenge to the UAS vs the ATS... I don't know if it actually makes it more effective or not. Many scrubber users use one sided screens, but people have also commented that they believe the light from both sides is bennificial to roots.

Please check the UAS test video and tell me about the air bubble flow if its not correct... is everything ok??

Air flow looks pretty good to me. I like that the bubbler is longer than the screen. Once you get decent water flow across the screen, the bubbles tend to rise at an angle, so that would help... Of course, depending on your circumstances of where this guy is going to sit.

might be a dumb question, but i am upgrading my 75 to a 180 and keeping the same sump which means ill have 2 extra feet in my stand... if i have a fuge on this sump can i still run a algae scrubber?

Not a stupid question... I don't, but many do. In theory, they compete, but people successfully keep both. Personally, I see the fuge with the scrubber helpful for more pod production, and food for Tangs.

It will sit on the back side of my fuge and the light will be 1x3w 660nm leds sitting outside at back... also im planning to cover the extra space on the bar with hot glue gun.. will it help? also i guess the flow on the screen will increase as the other sides on the bar will be blocked... do i need to cove the bar with PVC or something else? will algae growing on the bar will cut my airflow rate in future?

I don't think filling the extra length will really help much, but shouldn't really hurt either... I was trying to say that a little extra length might be good depending on intensity of you water flow horizontally across the screen. If you can cover the stone to block light somehow, that wouldn't hurt, as long as you're not blocking air flow, of course. Algae will grow on it otherwise, and you have to clean it off every couple weeks. but, your cleaning the glass and screen at least weekly, anyway. I suggest just try it and start tweaking later.

I just got another longer air stone for mine very similar to yours. My current one is the same thing, just too short. I plan to get it in today and use some black acrylic to do some light blocking for the stone.

Getting turf growth vs other growth on Upflow Scrubber?

Getting turf growth vs other growth on Upflow Scrubber?

I have a HOG.5 Upflow Algae Scrubber on my Nano Cube 28. It is on day 41. Attached is a photo 10 days after the first cleaning which occurred on day 30. I, however, don't see any growth that looks like turf algae to me (do you agree according to the photo?) I run my light 14-16 hours per day.

I've read that you want turf algae growth vs. other types because it is a better filter and better at removing metals and bad traces.

Is it true that you want to get turf growth versus other growth?

What can I do to increase turf growth (leave it longer before cleaning, dose iron, etc.)?

Will I likely get more turf growth naturally as it's in my tank longer?

Thanks, Doug

Hang in there. It takes a while for screens to mature. Most likely you'll see the GHA algae that you want to be seeing. What lighting are you using to power this? and how close is it to the screen?

It is the stock upflow alage scrubber HOG.5 from Santa Monica. It has 2 3-watt LEDs that are about 1" or a little more from the screen.

Quick update on my UAS. This past week I transitioned to the UAS and retired the ATS. You can see before pics a few posts back with the ATS in place - but here are some more with the most recent tweaks to the UAS.

Sump without ATS - see UAS on left side. Again once LEDs are modified - it'll be all LED lighting and CFL reflector will go away.

Not pretty - but functional. This holds the air stone in place creates a channel for the screens to fit into. It sits on floor of sump. The legs hold it against the outside wall (since high flow of the OF tries to push it away)

What it looks like with a 'screen' inserted into the channel. Two screens kind of lock together in this channel so I'll clean one at a time. Again the 'screens' are acrylic with velcro.

Kool..... wud like to see a video if possible when its working......

At 190 pages...i didnt read through it all.....but for lighting on a watefall type, do you do it with the same timers as the fuge, or something seperate?

WoW! 5 days but I made it from page one to here, I just installed an ATS on my breeding system last Sunday and hoping to get nitrates down without my now bi-weekly water changes
