Algae Scrubber Basics

My screen is 8 x 10. I have two of the 30w lights. I started with one 20 and one 30. The side with the 30w seemed to do better

Is this the light you have?

How far from the screen do you have it?

Get the 30w

It only uses 20w
Excellent, thank you! I saw you had the 30W and happy with it, but yours is 6 to 12" of your screen I think. I'm affraid to put it too close to the screen. I only have 12" between the wall and the screen where I want to put it.
Anyway, I will see if the 30W is good with the space I have, I'll move the 20W for my chaeto refugium and order a second 30W. Or, I may try to build my own led ramp.

I'm sorry my mistake. I only have the 20w lights. Had a 10w. And a 20w. So I bought another 20w. I have one on each side. About 4-4.5 in from screen. This thing grows like crazy. Started this about 6 weeks ago I think. I cleaned it off twice already. Last time was 4 days ago it's already covered. These lights are really nice and well worth the 30 bucks.

this is 4 days growth after cleaning

I think I got lucky. I only placed them so close cause that's all the room I had. And it seemed to work out perfect. If your further away you might want to do the 30w.

Quick update on my DIY ATS

Second cleaning of the ATS and I am stoaked! First cleaning was on the 4th so it's been 8 days of growing. Not only is the ATS growing well there has been a noticeable decrease in algae in the tank!

How it looked with the lights on when I got off the plane last night. I wasn't too happy with this, looks like there is a hot spot in the middle and not much more growth than the first cleaning.

Turns out the red light really shines through the algae and makes it look like there isn't much there! This is one side. Good solid growth.

Other side. A little hot spot in the middle but not too bad at all!

Slot pipe still nice and clean. Dodgy light blockers seem to be working OK.

Lots of growth still attached after a good through scraping.

Other side, lots of growth after scraping aswell.

A whole 20g of algae after I squeezed the water out! I really am stoaked. Way more than the 6g of wet algae last week.

Looks like ABS strips/sheet cut and bent (heated with heat gun). That's pretty easy to do by the way, available at McMaster Carr for a few bucks

I didn't read this entire thread (except the part of me inventing the internet, which, by the way, I did not. But I did invent blackworms :D) I also noticed someone said you can kill algae bleenies if they eat mortar. Dam, I wish I knew that before I built practically all my rocks out of mortar and I have bleenies climbing up the walls they are so healthy. I also sometimes feed my fish Plaster of Paris, yes, don't ask.
I designed using motor for growing algae by accident. When I started my reef I collected all the rock myself in the tropics. Eventually I started giving that rock away and building my own out of mortar only because I liked it better and I could custom build it. Then I noticed if the tank was going through an algae cycle, it would only grow on the mortar rocks and not on the real rock so I figured there was something I the cement that algae was attracted to. I am sure it "likes" the rough surface, but real rock is also rough so it must be the minerals in the cement it likes. I don't really care what it is but that is why I have always used it to grow algae only where I want it to grow.
Now I have to go and look at my poor algae bleenies to see if they are eating any mortar.. I wonder how they distinguish that from the dolomite gravel I use.

Wrong side of the bed this morning? Or the time change?.....kidding!

This is actually what I was going to do but I'm in semi remote Australia and couldn't find any place that would sell me ABS unless I wanted to buy in bulk.

So my dodgy light blockers are just a few layers of electrical tape. Stick it to the pipe and then fold the end over itself :D can't beat free.

Hi, posting a 4 week update.

Using a 4.5" x 4.5" screen lit on both sides by one of these $22 LEDs from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012C4QJ06?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00)

Here's what it looked like on Day 1:

(I fixed the uneven flow problem)

Them after 1 week:

I really didnt see much until after the 3rd week finished.
Then I went away for a whole week and when I came back i found this:

4 weeks

Yyyyeeea I've been dealing with a bit of an algae problem in my display ;) so really hoping this helps a ton.

I'm thinking this is pretty good growth for 4 weeks? Any opinions?

Up until now I only did gentle swishing directly in my sump.
So yesterday I tried to scrape some off using a plastic blade. I was afraid to scrape too hard so not a ton came off, looked like this:

Should I try to scrape more off? Or let it keep growing and gaining stronger roots?

I would say that you want to scrape some of that off but be conservative

Use the corner of the scraper and scrape a tic-tac-toe pattern on one side, then an "X" pattern on the other (maybe 3/4" to 1" spacing on your scrape lines), and give it a rub and rinse under tap water.

I never considered doing the screen swish in the tank/sump but I suppose that really doesn't hurt anything during that initial phase of growth where you just have kind of a dust layer.

Ok I know I've read about those patterns on here but cant remember, so do you mean like scrape patterns like this?

Oh also I swished in sump to avoid freshwater and killing pods as I thought I read something on here.
