All fish jump: I lost my female clownfish last night

Well, my 5 yo female ocellaris jumped sometime last night. I found her dried up on the floor this morning. She started with me in Berkeley 5 years ago, has lived in lots of systems. There was no tension between she and the other fish- I have a community tank.

I had just been contemplating making a screen after hearing that toby puffers jump. This was definitely unexpected.

So, she had not jumped for 5 years, and then for no apparent reason she finally did. So, some fish jump more frequently than others, but apparently all fish jump.

Sorry to hear. A large mesh screen will help, though make sure the mesh isn't too dense as this will cut back on light.

A couple weeks ago I was leaving the house and heard a splash. Walked to the tank and the light fixture had water on it and there was more running down the side of the tank. Someone jumped, fortunately they had a water landing!

My six line wrasse was found dried up behind the tank. I had him a couple of years. I bought a screen set up from BRS (bulk reef supply). Lets light in and is cheaper than losing fish.

Well, I also lost a six line years ago... wrasses are notorious for jumping, so that is expected. Clownfish, however, are not.

Yes, I ordered the clear screen from BRS. Even if I lost some light, I have tons so not a concern.

Sorry to hear.

Thanks. I am definitely sad about it. I feel like I let her down. Was hoping she'd live 25 years. :(

I'm going to get another ocellaris, but probably one with another pattern (don't want it to look like my former fish, dunno why, just think that would be sad); I'll probably get a juvi, and just let my black male ocellaris become female. He looks more timid without her, hugging the rock instead of swimming about. Sux. They were a mating pair.

thats a bummer,i diod not know that the clowns jumped!!! I have two,a black and a regular nemo :-) I am going to be getting a six line so that is good to know that they too are known for their jumping because i did not know that and yes a screen top is way cheaper than losing fish so it looks likes i should consider getting one myself!!!
Best of luck with you new fish. I really like the maroon clowns but i already have two so i cant get another.

I always feel that way whenever I loose one. I keep two pair( balck ocelaris, regualr ocelaris)in open tanks and have for years.

Yeah, I never had tops on any of my tanks in the last 5 years, either. I wasn't ever expecting her to jump. I'm not willing to let this happen again. I will make the screen this weekend.

I have white eggcrate that but have been procrastinating I lost a target mandarin the same way and feel your pain. I am getting ready to move in the next month so maybe when setting up I will find the time to screen the top:twitch:

i am sorry to hear about your girl jumping... we had a barbanious anthenious (?) - pink with green camoflauge ($150) that disappeared and when we upgrade our tank we found her dried up behind the tank... rrrrr... we empathize

I cover my display tanks but leave the frag tanks open since I'm in and out freuqently. They are 30 g,18wx36 long and only 12 inches deep and make a nice habitat for the ocellaris. I like to keep fish in them for the nutrients and feedings . I'll probably make screens for them now.

Toby's jump. Found my blue spotted toby ( canthigaster solandri) on the rug dried out after about 15 minutes last year. Put it back in the tank in a desperation move. It's swimming happily now. Remarkable recovery. That tank was covered but after the screening was not square leaving room for escxape.

lost my lion fish and a clown last month 2 days appart from each other. Made a net now from a deer fence they sell at HD and bamboo sticks.

Just got my screening in from BFS, yay! I will take pix as I assemble it. It's going to be interesting (not a square, since I will make it fit around my overflow box.)

Wow, Eugene, I never would've thought a Lion would jump... screens have got to be the most necessary thing to keep fishes.
