All you EVER wanted to know about Southdown

Is the yardright sand not the same anymore? The carribbean type? If not what would be a cheap subistute.

I'm in Middle TN as well, eyebedam. :)

I'm just wondering if there is ANY aragonite sand available at HD or Lowes? At all? Or anywhere else for that matter (besides the LFS) that can be had for cheaper than $30 for 20lbs (!!!)?

Any help is much appreciated.

Brandon

There were a few folks who stockpiled the southdown when it was available.....

Plus a few folks had palets delivered if I recall correctly so there might be some around. I had at least 20 bags of it but sold it all for what I paid for it back a few years ago. Now one could probably get 15.00 a bag for it!

I have 10 or 12 bags of it that are now worthless. I had the forethought to buy a bunch, but I stored it outside. Small holes in the bags have allowed water and dirt to get in. I guess it's not completely worthless, I'm sure it can be cleaned, I just don't know how much work that will involve.

If you can find it, pulverized limestone is often available under the "Pavestone" name brand at either Lowes or HD. This appears to be a regional thing tho.

I did a lot of research about aragonite based sand before I set up my last tank. My conclusion was that for a small tank, say 20g or so, I would pay the extra amount for Carib-Sea aragonite based sand. The cost is not that much and I knew what I was getting. For any tank larger, especially like 100+g, I would use regular silca based sand at HD or Lowes. IMO, by the time aragonite sand starts really buffering, which is around 7.2 pH if I recall correctly, most of your inhabitants are going to be in serious trouble anyway. So I don't see aragonite as an effective way of buffering your pH.

Thanks for the reply!

Is the pulverized limestone fine enough to be used as a substrate?

Thanks again!

Yes. Looks just like normal sand. All though I hear it can be dusty and needs to be washed first.

Check out Travis Stevens's 10g starter thread at the top. It's got a section on pul lime.

If I were you I'd buy it Severseas. Then, when you reach 50 posts, you can sell it on our selling and trading forums like crazy and become a reef millionaire. :D

Thank You Waterkeeper!

I finished reading your newbie "New Tank Thread" today. It took a long time, but was definitely worth it. You took the fear of a reef out of me, but now my billfold is scared!

Regards,
Scott

I'm actually considering funding my tank like this... lol.

Ah! I'm just not so sure how many fish get silica related respiratory problems when building sand castles in their playground. :D

Hey

put me down for some of that Southdown, have another tank I would love to set up with it. It used to be great, way back then, just walk into HD and get a bag for 4 bucks. Now, you got to walk through hell, with gasoline undies on to find it, lol.

Somebody PLEASE buy the company and set us reefers FREE from the tyranny of the unscrupulous companies selling the same thing at 4 times the price, lol.
