Aloha! A trip of a lifetime...

Hey Tim LOL (RCT...right on my radar now :)

I do feed gel-based foods as an addition to the Spectrum pellets. I feed both veggie cubes and meaty cubes. This food is home made by my LFS. It is filled with garlic, sponge, spirolina and other goodies. I have noticed an increase in cloration since using it and for double the amount it is the same price as Formula 1 and 2.

Tangwich - I currently have a ~50g 3-chamer refugium that has a modded ASM G3 and a UV sterilizer in the first column. The second chamber has 60+#'s of LR and a 3" substrate. I have all my cleaning crew in there. Lots of turbos, red and blue legged crabs.

There is a sponge that I clean every other week between the 2nd and 3rd column.

I run a Little Giant external pump that I have plumbed out to my garage due to the fact that when it was under the tank I had a micro-bubble issue.

I have a total of 300#'s of premium fiji, Marshal Island, and tonga branch live rock. All the live rock was from the time when my tank was a mixed reef. This was till my angels ate over $2000 of my coral in 2 weeks (its a good think I love my angels :)

As for lights, I run 2x96wx36" actinics and 2x96wx36" 10K daylight retrofit PCs and have 2x110wx48" VHO ultra actinics for more blue.

Inside the tank I have 2 Hydor 4 power heads and another single larger power head in the middle of the tank for appropriate flow through all the live rock.

As for quarantine process. All of my fish (except the Bandit) go through 6 weeks of QT in my 55g QT. I place each of my fish in the QT with various medications for 2 weeks and then put them all in Hypo for 4 weeks. Once they come out of hypo they are ready for the DT.

The only outbreaks of ich I have every had were from me being stupid and not paying attention. I have only lost 1 fish due ich and that was my powder blue tang after 2.5 years of having him healthy.

Videos!!!!

Videos!!!!

Ok...I took a couple of videos. I need to get a bigger memory card for a longer one, but these should give you a good idea of my tank.

*Note: tell me if you can tell who dominates the tank:bum:

Ok so I need to make a few updates to my facts in the story. I just got an earful from Robert about my memory.

The Nahaki's angel is from Johnston atoll not the Abes angel. And Nahaki's angel is found at 100-150ft. deep. The Abes angel is found greater than 400ft. deep and found in Palau.

As for the famous yellow mouth moray, it is very rare in Hawaii (found in the deep only), but (as Tim pointed out) is also found in shallow water in the Red Sea. Thats why it is worth almost as much as the dragon.

You really can fly fish home with you? I am spending july in Hawaii... and was planning on shipping a fish or two home the day i leave... but if you can fly them with you, that would be great, anything special you had to do?

Great information Ccampbell and just beautiful videos. That Emperor is no joke, huh? lol. As fat and healthy as that Blueface is, it was funny seeing it run for its life when the Emperor made a run after it. That Bandit looks so elegant in there and gives the tank another level of greatness. Thanks for posting those.

Ccambell if you talk to Rob again, ask him about the DME export season/limit. I have spoke to him once before when he had a mated pair for sale.

I'll see if I can find the post and IM him, but I know Hawaii has restrictions on DME exports, just curious what it is. I know I typically see less than a dozen or two on the market all year.

Great story :)
Am I the only one who could not see the pics?

Click on those 3 links and you will see a video on each.

Depends on the availability. I have seen them for as much as $1500 for the 1" ones. I have seen a 5" bandit on Divers Den for $999.

I am sure that mine would fetch a pretty penny due to the fact that it is 3" and went straight from the ocean to my tank and never had any issues with rough shipping. Plus he is eating everything I drop in the tank in the first couple of days in the tank.

I just got word that there was a nice catch in Oahu on crosshatch triggers. There are a couple pairs available.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

How much is that Bandit worth?

As much as we are willing to pay. In January LA had them listed at $250 for small, and I think it was $399 for large and when the Hawaii bill surfaced the price jumped. Since then I've seen two or three on Diver's Den for $999. I've seen anywhere from $325-500 for 4"-5.5".

With the economy where it is right now and warmer weather and we are seeing more and more in the market I expect the price to come down a bit. Hey, even Diver's Den lowered the price by $1,100 on their Gem Tang and the two Conspics been on sale for a while. Last year it was sold on the blink of an eye.

Great story and write up. The wife and I were on the Big Island about 8-9 years ago and the day before leaving we found a pet store where the guy would collect his own fish, after talking with him for awhile he invited me to go with him the next day collecting. It still kills me to this day that we were leaving the next day and we didn't meet him earlier in the trip. We did purchase a Chevron Tang who is still with us and aptly named Kona. This was before 9/11 so I easily brought him on the plane with me and he sat in my lap for the 10 hour ride home. Great memories when we look at him.

ROB IS A CRAZY GUY.....HE GOES DOWN TO DEPTHS OF 220 FT. ROB TAUGHT ME TO DIVE AND GAVE ME MY SCUBA PADI CERTIFIACTION. QUICK STORY...MY INTRO DIVE (MY VERY FIRST DIVE WITH A SCUBA TANK) ROB HAD ME JUMP OFF A CLIFF INTO SURF THEN DESCEND DOWN TO 60 FEET. WE WERE DOWN AT 60 FEET AND MY THROAT GOT REALLY DRY AND I STARTED TO HACK COUGHS UNDER WATER...I PANICED AND HIT MY BCD INFLATOR AND SHOT TO THE SURFACE LIKE A ROCKET...MAN DID ROB GIVE ME THE SCOLDING AND LECTURE OF A LIFETIME ABOUT THE BENDS...I WAS SUCH A BEGINNER AT SCUBA BACK THEN AND ROB HAS TAKEN ME UNDER HIS WINGS AND TAUGHT ME HOW TO CATCH FISH.,...UMMM FYI THOUGH I WILL NOT GO PAST 100FT. AND WHEN I SEE A LARGE EEL WITH TEETH (JUST KEEP SWIMMING,JUST KEEP SWIMMING) lol!! IVE SEEN ROB GRAB LG. EELS WITH HIS HANDS....I'LL STICK TO THE SMALL ONES !!! ALOHA

LOL!! Yeah I agree with you. We were at 150ft+ on my first dive in 20 years. Fortunately I didn't freak out. I was too busy making a wish list of fis at the bottom of the ocean.

As for the eels, Rob was all about grabbing them. He said a lot of old school Hawaiian collectors stick thier hands in front of the eel and let them bite to get them out so it wont harm them!!!!

Crazy

Campbell, great story and beautiful aquarium! I threw in some notes below to answer some questions and elaborate...

To me, it looks like a Joculator?
DSC_0448-1.jpg

You nailed it... despite being oceans apart Centropyge nahackyi is placed in the "multicolor" complex along with C. joculator and four other species... Also, did the curator tell you that these ARE found outside of Johnston Atoll? Tony Nahacky caught a specimen off of the Kona Coast of Hawaii and thus had the species named after him. It is still the only specimen ever found outside of Johnston... but there have to be others there. :)

In the exhibit next to the masked angels and interruptus was a tank that included a butterfly fish that is still to this day unidentified. And to the aquarium's knowledge, this fish is found sometimes in trade in Japan, but due to the cold temperatures it is used to and how deep it is collected, it is VERY uncommon. All that was posted on this fish was that it was a Prognathodes sp. There was a pair of them in the tank and I personally thought they looked like a morph of a 3 line damsel and a butterfly. It was caught in Oahu at more than 375ft!!!! If you have a rebreather and a taste for danger...you too can catch these guys just off the shore of Diamond Head :D He was in the same tank with a yellow anthia. I have never seen one of these guys before either. It was pretty cool too, but it didnt look too happy.

This is an undescribed species of Prognathodes genus butterfly that Rich Pyle collected. Robie out there is crazy enough going to 200 feet plus on air... but Rich has some crazy stories going to 400 feet! Rich is going out later this month to collect the holotype specimen in a very remote place called Waikiki... :D It's pretty amazing that a fish found so close to millions of people was not found for so long... and read below about its pretty amazing connection to Centropyge abei... :)

You forgot to mention the RAREST angelfish in that whole aquarium that shares that same exhibit! Even better was that it was collected by an RC member! This fish is the ONLY Centropyge potteri/ C. fisheri hybrid ever known! Here's a shot of it...

This is a picture of the ONLY (the curator stressed this) captive Abes (pronounced aaa-bays) Angel in the world.
DSC_0506.jpg

This fish was also collected by Rich Pyle... you could see a snipet of the video of the collection here.

In the video in the background you could see a butterfly... I asked Rich about this and he believes this to be the same species as the one in Hawaii... thousands of miles away in Palau... just a slight coloration difference...

Bringing it all together this is a shot of Rich Pyle holding the holotype Centropyge abei in his hand, with John Earle (the videographer in the video above) in the center and me on the left. This fish was collected in Sulawesi Indonesia on an expedition looking for coelacanths, funded by a Japanese aquarium and the director Yoshitaka Abe... thus the name abei... oh... and the photo was taken by Frank Baensch... the one man operation behind RCT that you just learned about... :)

Copps - thanks for the reply! I was wondering when you would chime in and straighten some things out :) The potters hybrid that you have is awesome! I remember seeing it and thought it was just another potters angel and completely forgot to snap shots of it (oh well, I'll get them when I go back in March).

Robert and I were talking about you during the dive. He was telling me that you come out quite often to go dive with another of the collectors on Oahu? That is awesome. I think I remember seeing a story with you or by you about a Male Masked angel off the shore of Oahu? Any updates on that?

Also where in N. Virgina are you? Anywhere near the Reston/Herndon area?
