Aloha! A trip of a lifetime...

I live in Leesburg, about 15-20 minutes from the Reston/ Herndon area...

I travel to Hawaii about once a year with work... with a second stop usually on my way to or back from Guam for a couple of days each year. I've been fortunate enough to visit and dive all six islands we can. I also dived the seventh populated island, Niihau, that does not allow land visitors. :) I've met many friends out there through the years including wholesalers, divers, and ichthyologists. Oahu especially is such a hotbed for a fish nerd really... I'll have an update in September on the male personatus we caught, as I'm meeting up with the Japanese guy who purchased him. I'll also be traveling to Osaka Japan in January to meet up with some of them, including the author of the new angelfish book Kiyoshi Endoh. To read the full story on the personatus the thread is here.

What a beaut!

On that trip we were targeting bandits of course... and here is one of the little guys in my hand... I'll admit the personatus stole the thunder though!

John

Hey John, What is that Aussie scribbled doing in a bandit collection bin? Was that at a wholesalers? Thanks, Tim

That was back at their facility, not on the boat... As is common with many wholesaler/collectors in Hawaii they bring in stuff from Australia... Hawaii is a natural stepping stone between here and there... :)

Thanks for the update John! I am actually out on a client in Reston till August. I would love to see your collection. It would be an honor to shake the hand of the most famous Angelfish NUT!!!

I remember the thread very well and I also remember the ripple effect that the personatus caused amongst the wholesalers and online retailers after you guys caught that fish.

JustRareFish still has the picture you took on their home page :)

Awesome...just simply awesome!!

Hey John, I must say this again. You were the first to show me what RCT was all about after reading a thread about a year ago. Though i have been keeping fish for 20 years+, mind you I am 29 years old. I am still that little kid who constantly bugged the help at the LFS. Thankfully I am far more educated about fish than most LFS workers. I was posting like I knew something about angels and asked what is RCT? Well I was quickly shown how little I know about angels and all fish for that matter. That is what i truly love about this hobby. There are endless things to learn about and always new things that are being discovered for those who are really well read about fish. I consider myself a beginner in the world of fish knowledge and what is better than that!!!! You can learn something new everyday. Regards, Tim

Yeah i put that fish on hold, should be making its way from neverland soon!;)

Thanks Stun. Yeah the emperor is definitely the king. He doesnt take much from any of the other fish (except Pablo Escobar, the crazy 5" clown trigger that would face off with anything in its way.)

He started to charge the Bandit and was IMMEDIATELY removed.

I was about to say Campbell. You questioned me about putting a baby Japanese Dragon Moray with my fish? Putting a really shy bandit with an existing clown trigger??? Hopefully when i add my dragon he will behave. From those i have spoken with about dragons. If you get them small and feed them "dead" foods and are well fed there shouldn't be an issue. We will find out soon hopefully. Regards, Tim

LOL...I know I know. It was risky to begin with, but I had to try. He was a fun fish and grew like a weed, but when a fish that is less than half the size of the biggest most dominant fish and basically flips him the bird when he says get out of the way you have to think what the trigger would be like at around 8-10".

The bandit is actually quite outgoing. He is not shy at all. The second he hit the water he was exploring like mad. He loves the cave work. I am really suprised. I had heard that these fish were really loners, but he likes to tail along with the emperor and the blueface.

UPDATE - well, I just got my new shippment of fish straight from Hawaii.

I decided that my Bandit was looking lonely so, I got him a friend.

I also got a pair of .75" potters angels!!! These guys are tiny. They dissapear in my tank and are having a ball going through all the Marshal Island live rock caves.

Hope you like the pictures.

Btw...forgot to mention, the Potters are so small they would fit in the mouth of my Emperor! I held my breath for about an hour after putting them in the tank.

Very nice CCampbell, hopefully you can indulge us once again with a short video(s) of your great creation? If not possible, thanks for sharing the great pics.

I will be putting a video up soon. I want the Potters to come out. They are enjoying the playgroung that is my live rock and only come out as to say "we are still here" and then they are off again.

so far the bandits get along quite well. The old one seems re-energized now the new one is in there.

The bandits get to around 8-9"
