Alpha 170 yes or no

I'm going to be getting a skimmer someday. I was looking at Alpha 170 It comes with a Red Dragon for the pump. It looks like a well made skimmer. I have gotten other skimmers that I wasn't happy with. And it has a small foot print 11.5" x 7.75" that will take up less room in my sump. What do you think of this skimmer? How much water does it need to sit in? I'm going to use a 20 gallon long for my sump and the tank is a 90 gallon. Do you or do you not recommend this skimmer?

That sump seems small, I would use a bigger one. IMO You want the skimmer to sit rougnh 8-9 inches of water, and a 20 long wont have much overflow protection. Might want to go larger on the sump so it will not overflow. JMO

Agreed, gives yourself something with more overflow room to be safe. Your floors will be glad you did!

My Alpha 170 works well in my 10 gallon standard glass tank/sump. Skimming my 60gallon sps tank..

Mine is in a 20 long sitting in 9" of water and has plenty of room for overflow when I shut the main pump down.

its not a bad unit. I think their are some better performing option still available. Nice skimmer. But still has a few bugs that are being worked out. Again my opinion. But hey. What do I know?
