Hey Steve,
I'm not aware of any studies direactly comparing fluorescent to metal halide lighting. other than a very basic set of measurements I did a couple of years ago: Light Intensity.
I will shortly be embarking on a series of measurements which will compare NO fluorescent on magnetic ballasts to NO on IceCap ballast to 150W MH lamps. The results are probably still a few months away (as I don't have a lot of time).
Once I have everything set up for this, I could add power compacts and a few other lighting types.
Basically, the set up will be a 48x18x18" tank with the various lighting types at "average" height above the tank and to measure irradiance levels at various places within the tank to build up a map of the light levels.
