Ammonia

Darn, I had two turbo snails die and I dont know how long they were there dead. They stunk to hi heaven when I pulled them out. I have 1.0-2.0 readings on an old test kit AFTER doing 15% water change. Plan on doing another WC 50% if I can make enough water, mix, airate and heat before I head to Chicago Wed.

Any other suggestions? Anyone use ammo-carb? How'd it work?

Darn little tanks! My 300 wouldnt have blinked at two snails.

You might try Seachem prime. It claims to bind ammonia so it isn't harmfull. Of course the water changes would be the best since you've removed what was dieing. Can you get water anywhere around here? I would offer some but I ran out of mixed water today adding a sump to my 40. How do the inhabitants look?

That PhosPure + Zeolite you got in our last DFS order is supposed to reduce Ammonia too... Really most carbon media will help... But like Chris said, water changes are probably best...

How old is the ammonia test kit? In my experience, old ammonia tests give false positives when the readings are 0.

I have 5G of saltwater mixed, aerated, and ready to go if you need it. I also have a little bit of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate binder that I use for my freshwater tank (I use it as a dechlorinator - the other items are a perk). You are welcome to that, too.

i dont have mixed water, but i have a trashcan full of r/o water made up if you need any don.. give me a call, or just come by

I dont have much faith in the test kit because it's really old, but my candy canes are all shriveled up which tells me they're not liking something... But everything else looks happy. Test shows lower levels tonight 0.25-0.50, but then again I did clean a filthy canister filter after seeing the high ammonia.

I think I'll be able to make 12g (two Kent salt buckets) plus I have 4-5g in my top off jug that I can use. Combined, that's a 50% water change so I feel more comfortable about leaving the tank.
