An unforseen fork in the road

Yep, Paul is a good guy. It wouldn't make sense that one of those transformers would go out due to heat alone but it could be defective. It looks like you could get meter probes on the output to check for voltage. That would make life easier. Just have AO send you a new transformer if it is shutting down.

Trying to replace a ballast could be NAZZ T

Is that "NAZZ T" like cleaning a skimmer that requires a ladder and a garden hose?

Or "NAZZ T" like dancing with what just a few minutes earlier seemed like a smoking hot coed only to have the house lights come up and you realize somebody's basset hound got loose and it's waiting for you at the exit?

For those that didn't catch my my post and Paul's answer over in the T5 question and answer thread:

The transformer box for that fixture contains the step up transformers (120V to 220/230/240V). It is easier and cheaper to use European T5 HO ballasts for 80W lamps because they are available in a two lamp version.
The light cutting out/off may be because of one of the transformers is over heating or from a bad T5 ballast which are housed inside the fixture. I’m not sure if the transformers are equipped with a cut off temp switch (thermal switch). If they do not it is probably one of the T5 ballasts. I don’t have my product specifications with me right now. It’s best to contact the manufacturer and trouble shoot the problem with them. I’ll be traveling the next few days and I can’t get information on the parts used right now.

One more thing. Those step up transformers were originally designed for HID ballasts (150 watts maximum) but can be used for other applications. In this case they are providing the proper voltage to the T5 HO ballasts.

OK, you had me on that one for a minute Brett. My first thought was step up Xformers, but the "HID" threw me. I wondered what the heck they were trying to pull.

Is there a little fan in the Xformer box?

I wish.

Running an experiment now. Got big fan pointed at little gray box. Waiting to see if lights shut off.

Ok, lights still shutting off after about an hour. Same pair of 2. Transformers seemed pretty cool. Certainly not hot enough to have a problem.

Guess I'll start moving bulbs around.

News travels fast! You didn't happen to have a seat in a certain poker game tonight did you? :)

Ali hooked me up with a Lubbock wrasse, a Solar wrasse, a small Purple tang, and a Valentini puffer. The puffer and I had a nice long talk right before he went in, with me explaining my expectations about acceptable behavior.

He also made me a nice deal on a trio of ultra maxima's and a few misc corals.

Sadly, I was unable to sweet talk him out of a Regal Angel he had promised to hold for someone else. Heck of a Nice guy Ali is... but the force is strong with this one.

So far most everyone has settled in nicely and all are eating. Keeping my eye on the purple tang as he won't stop pacing up and down the end panel.

No, my wife would have shot me, I still have (had) to finish taking X-mas down. I was given a hour and a half break to get to the fish store and back before dinner. Now that it's done I can work on my tank all day tomorrow :D

I've located the problem with the lighting unit. The manufacturer suggested I turn up the power supply for the fans one notch. When I went to do so I discovered the fans were not actually working. I had originally checked them, but dismissed them as the culprit as I thought I had felt air movement. Obviously I was wrong. So, for the short term I've set a fan atop the end of the tank pointed at the fixture and everything is working fine.

Emails are currently going back and forth between Will at Aquarium Obsessed, Alessandro in Italy and myself. It's definitely not the fastest trouble shooting I've ever done, but I'll happily give them a crack at it. Luckily, the fan assembly looks like it will just drop right out with the removal of 4 screws so it should be an easy swap if need be.

Thermal overload switch = Good. Sending the whole ballast box back = Bad. Glad its just a fan:) Show some pics of those critters!

Well, I have an update on the lighting front, but unfortunately, it's not great news.

For the last couple months I have been in a 3-way email with Will from Aquarium Obsessed and Alessandro from Sfiligoi trying to get this sorted out. It's basically been a step by step trouble shooting exchange with Alessandro walking me thru each thing to check. It was a ridiculously slow process that really never should have gone on as long as it did because I should have just yanked the whole fan module out from the get go and did the trouble shooting all at one sitting instead of the way we did it.

So what did I find? It seems I had a break in the cable between the 12v power supply and the fan module. So on Jan 30th I was informed by Will at AO that a replacement would be going out from Sfiligoi first thing the following week.

However, he failed to mention that Sfiligoi was sending it out by bicycle messenger because it took a whopping 4 weeks to get a $3.00 replacement cable. What an absolute joke! Perhaps I'm expecting too much here, but when you have a customer who drops serious coin for a top of the line fixture that doesn't work as advertised, you do not, and I repeat, you DO NOT simply drop the replacement part into an outgoing shipping container along with the rest of your normal shipment.

Couple this with some serious frustration that Will at AO is functioning as the go between and, while I'm sure he is doing the best he can, telling me he didn't realize that I was actually USING the light all this time doesn't go real far towards keeping me a warm and fuzzy customer.

So, the cable arrives a few weeks ago and I pull the fixture off the tank so I can install it. Only I can't install it because Sfiligoi failed to include the crimp-on pins for the wire ends that slide into the terminal block screw posts on the fan module. :mad2: And of course an hour of searching the internet fails to turn up anything small enough to work. So I switch to plan B and out comes the soldering iron and some shrink tubing where I manage to hack together a reasonably good substitute for crimp-on pins.

An hour later the fan module is back in and running and the fixture is back hanging over the tank. And imagine my lack of surprise when a whole 30 minutes later I walk by and see the same ballast has shut down again and the same two lights are out. :mad2: And why my lack of surprise you ask? Well, it's because the entire time I'm two-stepping with Sfiligoi I can't help but wonder why a fixture that was originally released to the market without active cooling suddenly NEEDS active cooling to keep a couple lights on.

So after a whopping 3 months of time, effort, and frustration, I have made absolutely no progress on getting this issue resolved. I am literally right back at square one.

Two days ago I emailed Aquarium Obsessed and informed them that I am done! I informed Will that I am no longer going to play lighting repairman and that I feel that I have not only been more than patient, but that I have gone above and beyond trying to make this work. I want a new fixture plain and simple!

Which brings us to today. Will has referred me directly to Alessandro and asked that I provide him with my schedule so he may call and speak to me. Which I did - 8:00am to 11:00pm PST all weekend long. So here I sit.

In all fairness, I should confess that my phone did ring, this morning as a matter of fact - at 5:59am with an unknown number and no message left when I failed to shrug off the deep throws of slumber and get to the phone in time. So gain, here I sit, waiting.... :mad2:

You and me both Marc.

In the mean time since I'm waiting, what's a dedicated RC'er to do but post some pics...

Here is the rolling ceiling track I fabricated that allows me to move the light fixture out of the way when I ned to do tank maintenance. It's basically closet door track with the rollers mounted to a custom frame that holds the pendant cabling. I wish I could take credit for the design but it originally came from another RC'er whose name escapes me at the moment. A thousand apologies for not being able to give credit where credit is due, and if anyone knows the member I'm speaking of, please feel free to speak up so he gets the credit.

I still have to reinforce the frame a bit as it has a slight bow, as well as getting a couple coats of paint so it matches the track. I also have to fill in a few ceiling holes leftover from install attempt #1.

Overall I think it turned out really well. I have enough travel to move the fixture half way off the tank on one side, and completely off the tank on the other. All this using just one finger. So, not only does this make it a breeze to get my arm in there to do some work, but it should make changing bulbs and cleaning the protective glass shield a snap as well.

Brett, that sliding light idea is great. I may have to "borrow" the idea.

Well, that news about the light fixture just blows! I think at this point I would want my $$ back and chose a different light. They should at least offer to replace the entire fixture at this point.

A got a wild hair and decided I wanted a UV sterilizer. Not sure exactly why I bought it, not even sure if I will really use it, but that little voice said I needed one so I went ahead and ordered one up. I have no idea what my plans are for it in the long term, as I originally considered ozone, but the more I researched it the more I kept coming back to the UV instead. For the short term I'm plumbing it into the refugium/quarantine section of my sump.

After a bit of research I settled on the Emperor Aquatics 50w HO Smart UV. And of course it came with no mounting hardware. Figures! So I had to hack together a hanger for it. I actually caught a break when I went to have it sprayed with Line-X as the shop was just finishing up for the day and sprayed it while I waited. The cradle is little more than a couple 3/4" plywood hooks and the UV just lifts out if need be.

I also mounted up the ballast, and since I had the tools out, shortened up the cord for good measure.

Sometimes it pays to be in the right place at the right time. On a recent outing to Amazing Reef's and Aquariums, Ali showed me a used Korallin reactor that had just come in that morning. He said it was a great deal... low miles... owned by a little old lady from Pasadena, or something like that. Then again, maybe he just saw a quick turn around. Regardless, it was a complete package and did look nearly brand new. I wasn't planning to do a reactor, but the price was right and when opportunity knocks....

Anyway, I ordered up a couple billet bottle brackets from an online chassis shop and mounted the bottle up off the floor.

Unfortunately, I have a whole slew of other things that are more pressing so getting this thing hooked up and dialed in will have to wait a while.

I don't remember if anyone asked or not but have your tried swapping that ballast with one in another position to rule out a possible internal ballast problem?

These foriegn manufacturers should hire an interprising young lad in a central part of the US, say Aurora Colorado to do their warranty repairs :D
