An unforseen fork in the road

I like your UV hanger and your CO2 holder. Looks very high-end, as if you'd planned it all along. :)

I don't remember if anyone asked or not but have your tried swapping that ballast with one in another position to rule out a possible internal ballast problem?

These foriegn manufacturers should hire an interprising young lad in a central part of the US, say Aurora Colorado to do their warranty repairs :D

Grim, in all honesty I'm not feeling real motivated right about now to put any more time and labor into this than I already have. Getting the fans out was little more than removing the glass and taking out 3 screws and the module just dropped out so I felt like that wasn't too much to ask of me.

But getting to the ballasts? Not feeling it. And why should I have to do that? All I want is what I paid for and that's a working light. Now, if they want to refund half my money and say best of luck I might find a bit more motivation.

And if I'm going to go that route I might just gut the thing and wire in some IceCaps with a couple-three fans on the top to boot.

If you havent already one final desperate act might be to change the lamp with one from a different position if it isn't a hastle. I've heard of stranger things (and worse luck) than to have the bad fan being a coincidence to having a bad lamp running on the same ballast. That could drive you to drink. Good luck.

OK, here's a little something I've been working off and on for a while now. Just finished it up this afternoon. This is the hallway on the other side of the wall from the tank. The cabinets are from the same company as my bar cabinets and recess into the wall between the 2x4" studs.

The cabinets weren't in the original game plan but after doing the ones for the bar I realized how nice it would be to not have to get on my hands and knees and stick my head into my stand to dink with my VorTech settings.

There was a massive load of wires that needed to be routed and hidden but I somehow managed to cram them all in there.

Speaking of Vortech's, I just had a 2nd one fail on me. For some unknown reason the backing plate on the wet side assembly is stressing and cracking around the impeller shaft. The last one looked a near duplicate of this one.

IceCap reparied it under warranty, but I've barely had it back a week and now a 2nd one goes out on me.

I'm kind of glad I picked up a spare wet side assembly as a backup, but still, 2 in a little over a month?

And last but not least, here's some of those elusive tank shots

If you look close you can see my Regal Angel following my wrasse around the tank. I had told Ali at Amazing Reef's and Aquarium's that I was looking for one and he rang me up just a few weeks later with one in hand. Seems he wheeled and dealed a local wholesaler who had come across just one. The little guy acclimated really well and the only hitch is he has been extremely picky as to what he likes to eat. Cyclopeeze and Nori are a winner, but everything else is on a case by case basis. He will literally chase each individual piece of food down, looking for just the right one, and if it doesn't meet his approval, it's on to the next.

Your tank is very beautiful and this thread is very informative.

That is very odd about the double failure in such a short period of time. Please email us at service@ecotechmarine.com and I'll get you the new parts out immediately tomorrow.

That cabinet is awesome! I can't think of a better place to put $1800 worth of gear. :D Have you checked on it from time to time to see if it feels warm in there? I don't know how warm the 12v power supplies get, but I've never had them in an enclosed box together like yours.

Can you see your reef from both sides? Let's see even more pictures; I'm striking while the iron is hot. ;)

That's a great idea, Ken!

I asked Weatherson, but he's 4 hours north of y'all. That's 8 hours round trip, and thus probably not doable.

I'd like to see a few tanks while I'm in town, and the only problem I foresee is that it will be on weekdays when people are probably at work. I guess we could just ask them to leave a key under their mats. :D

We have after work, and all live in the same area. I'll let Brett volunteer his tank, and I'll get you there and my place.

Brett, in the pictures of your tank, I don't see where you have four Vortec's mounted at, where are they?

Marc, it's really not that warm at all in there. If I had to guess I'd say 85-90 degrees or so.

Now, the transformer box for the the T5 pendant... that's a totally different ball game. You could fry and egg on that puppy. I will for sure have to put a fan in the other cabinet on that install and even then I'm not sure if it will be enough.

So you're saying you want me to go and clean that side of the tank too? Geez! You're killing me here Marc :)

Ken, those Vortech's are on the head end of the tank. Two on each side about 2" in from the sides. The uppers about 8" down from the top, and the other two, about 8" below those. My returns are directly above those and are canted about 15 degrees downward.

Water flow is basically down both sides to the opposite end where it reverses and runs back up the middle towards the overflow. The return up the middle is so strong, I can only run the Vortech's at 50% or I get Jacuzzi action the first two feet in front up near the pumps. These things can create some serious undertow when you have them all at one end of the tank.

You guys are welcome anytime you want to stop by when I'm home. (and anytime I'm not if you think you can get past my attack cat) I work a couple day on, and then have a couple off so I do have some alternating days off during the week.

Brett,
How long have you been running the tank now? How is the maintenance/finickyness compared to your eco-wheel system?

I finally plumbed in a skimmer onto my eco-wheel tank.

Thanks. Matt

I'll be there on Wednesday April 2nd until Sunday the 6th, but the 5th and 6th is the MAX event so I'm thinking Thursday or Friday perhaps.
