And so it begins

Thank you Pope. My plan is to restock once the weather warms.

Last night I checked on the tank after having lights out for 4 days. I used a small pc 6500K desk lamp and some of the zoas opened up for the shorten light period.

Tank looks much cleaner than it did last week but I won't know the level of improvement until lights are back to normal cycle.

Stay tuned and enjoy your tank.

The tank is back up and running as usual. I can see improvements to it but still saw some dino strands so I don't think I won.

I guess I will have to do a second round of lights out and may increase the treatment after reading through the dino experiment thread in the chemistry forum again.

Sorry to hear with your issues with Dino's.

Fought them a couple times, and did multiple a week LIGHTS out, walls covered in thick paper so no light comes throught tactics then keeping pH high, while not adding new or any nutrients in the tank. barely feeding fish, losing every invert etc,

Been there done that, I feel your pain. Just be prepared when you win to do massive water changes as they all turn to dust after you win.

Thanks Charles.

No fish, so I feed once a week just for the worms etc and I could count the number of 3mm-sized pellets I dump in each time.

I kept debating how to do lights out until I decided just moving the tank to an unused tank stand would be the easiest thing to do.

I will probably do a WC this weekend and do another lights out. The only thing I didn't do was increase my pH so I may have to address that as well.

I did see some new coraline algae that I hadn't before the treatment so that is a good sign. I just wish my plating CA would come back.

Hey my friend, I discovered this about 14 years ago and used it when setting up new tanks and after my once a year major tank cleanings. It is 100% safe and I have turned a lot of reefers on to it over the years. It is not a chemical, basically, and unless the make up has changed, it consist of Nitrobactor and Nitrosoma bacteria, good bacteria. In all my years, knock on wood, I only had one issue with any outbreaks in my early years and nothing since using the Special Blend. Check it out if you have a moment. It's great for any reef tank by the way and safe and no, it's not a necessity for anyone. Good luck man.

If your doing your 7 days of darkness, I wouldn't do a WC in between. As the point of 7 days of darkness is to starve out the dino's. And hardly feeding to ensure what ever food you introduce gets eaten right away and is not left over and turned to further nutrients which help the Dino's.

Doing WC just adds more new clean nutrients to your tank. I save for large WC after the battle and the dinos' turn to dust then I do a 50%, 25% then 10% WC every other week while siphoning out all the dino's that turned to dust.

RIP 6.23.10 - 4.17.13

I came home last night to a blizzard. I don't know the cause since I don't dose and nothing has been added/changed.

Don't know what plans I have for the tank so we shall see. Thanks everyone for reading this thread and remember to enjoy your tank.

Thanks.

It isn't a big deal, only an aquarium, and when I started I decided that whatever happens so be it.

Thanks John I appreciate it. The tank got a fw bath last night and I will probably do a vinegar wash of the rock work to try and get rid of any bound nutrients.

Not sure if I will do this tank again because Brayden wants his 2.5 that he "stole" from me set up.

Sad to see it finish, I followed along but still a noob so didn't comment but I enjoyed following along on the journey with this tank.

Cheers!

Thanks for stopping by Priscacara.

I inspected the rock and the only places that had eroded were the really thin areas attached directly to the glass. I acid washed the rock to clean it and if I bring this one back to life I will have to fix a few spots plus I want to close off the intake area for the filter.

Oh man! I just found this thread today and went all the way through and kept thinking "I can't wait to see what this is gonna look like!" just to get to here and have it end like that... Reminds me of reading the end of Hannibal (fitting for your avatar). Sorry for the loss, but it was essentially an experiment, right? It was looking fantastic and l thought you did a great job updating, and gave some great ideas and insight along the way. (Especially using what you see in nature. Like the local landmark rock formation right above my house, duh! Right AFTER I finish rock-scaping. Ha! http://washingtondnr.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/2011_01_04_bnr-saddlerock_image-comp2.jpg)

I'm the kind of person that jumps hobbies all the time. I have had a 55g set up for about 5 yrs and am cycling a 180g right now to keep my interest in the hobby going (not that I'm bored, but I can finally afford to and like challenges). After reading your initial post I could easily see that this will probably be the direction of my reef keeping hobby... Experiments. Challenges. (Chemistry/biology background, that makes sense.)

Time for me to start thinking outside the [glass/acrylic] box!

Thanks for posting and I can't wait to follow on your next adventure!

Ouch. Well imagine the slightest instability in a small tank could be both unnoticed and detrimental. Better luck on the next go round.

Board:

Sorry that it was a let down and I agree about Hannibal. That rock work would look great in a tank just don't make a landscape be underwater like so many freshwater tanks. I think they are beautiful and works of art but to me look out of place like you are watching fish fly around a tree.

I learned a few things about this hobby and am satisfied with my results. Sure it would have been great to hit the 5 year mark but maybe I will with my next tank.

Handil:
True but I will never know the cause of the issue. The only parameters I ever tested were salinity and temperature. Perhaps if I had tested things it would still be going but again it was an experiment and those must end.

Falcao:

Thanks for stopping by again and I am sorry it wasn't on better news.

i just read the majority of that 12 page thread and now i think that i will try a project very similar to this one....... after all this experience, what do you think the hardest part of this build was? just so i can prepare myself 8-)
