And so it begins

perhaps the staple size hole is the trick. my stock bottles from current were about a pencil eraser size hole and that could very well be the problem.

Thanks Geo.
Always enjoy looking at your tanks and your take on things.

I like it too: simple, cheap, and it works.

It uses gravity, I pulled it out of the office recycling bin, and I cannot overflow anything due to pump issues etc.

Oh and it is dead silent.

Wow another week huh?

I missed 2 days of work this week (again) but somehow the tank did not get swept away.

I am happy to report that I have started on the stand. I did not want the traditional wooden stand rather something sturdier and um manly yeah that is it manly.

Rewind back to the beginning of summer for a minute please. We remodeled our kitchen this year and we decided to go with marble counter tops. We used a local family owned store and in the back they had a marble graveyard of all the left over pieces. When we were finalizing our order I mentioned to the sales lady how much I would like to get a piece of marble. She told me to go out and get whatever I wanted just to be careful not to fall. So while my wife was paying I grabbed my son and we went hunting. There were thousands of pieces on the ground and though hard to sort while holding a 9 month old I found a few pieces I really liked. As it turned out a thunderstorm with lightning was moving into the area and so we grabbed a piece we liked and made a dash back to the car.

My wife asked me what I was going to do with it and I mumbled I don’t know and in my best Carl Spackler voice: “I don’t think the heavy stuff’s gonna come down for quite some time now ….. .”

Luckily the lightning flashed overhead so we got out of there in a hurry.

So I have the stand top I just now need to make the concrete legs.

Oh and the next time you need some inspiration etc. look around because you never know where it will come from. I was eating popcorn the other night and the popcorn looked just like little rocks. The funny thing was they stacked pretty well together.

.

I sealed the top today because it was warm enough. I like the fact that it is not perfectly square and looks more natural.

have you been watching your PH?? typically homemade rock needs to soak for about 4-6 weeks with frequent water changes before the PH stabilizes.

Thanks for the heads up on the DIY rock. I did not test the pH until after your comment and it was 8.5 so a little higher than normal but within range.

I don't know if it was at that level the whole time or has been dropping due to WC and top offs.

I have used this before and when tested pH never spiked but I used a much smaller amount of rock with much more water.

Based upon comments from Mr. Wilson he has used it numerous times and thrown LR in the next day without issue.

BUT as with anything I would test to be sure. Sometimes it is the most basic things that we overlook that are the cause of our issues. I had my tank crash once due to stray voltage from my return pump but that is another story.

Checked my pH and it was under 8.4 so I hope I can proceed with stocking plans.

Changed the carbon and did a 1600 ml WC for the weekend plus top off etc.

I have been wokring on plans for my stand and I may scrap the granite top and go with something related to the LR.

Note: Once again I wrote marble in my post instead of granite. I did this over in the DIY section and I did this during the entire kitchen build. My wife got tired of correcting me and would just go on.

Sorry this has not moved faster but I believe it will all be worth it.

My tank went through new tank syndrome this week and the water was cloudy starting on Monday but today it is pretty much gone.

I see some algae on the rocks so I need a small CUC.

Thanks for looking (again).

might think of checking out if a marble counter top shop would make you some shaved dry rock. I saw pics of a guy who cut is rock into 1/2" plates, then you could use those instead.

Thank you for the suggestion. Really have not thought much on it this week. Just not feeling the love for the stand yet and I have not seen anything around me for inspiration.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday. Beer for the adults and candy for the kiddies.

And yes a man can still walk in the Light.

Well no small LR but I threw some more from my tank at home in along with a few snails. They are eating the algae that has been popping up during the last week.

Oh and I found the wet side of my nimble nano glass scrapper. It has been missing for about a month now. It was attached to my truck's gear shift on the underside.

I was letting my son drive my truck and I reached under and there it was all along.

No I have no clue how it got there.

I think my PH frag is back down to 4 p though.

I cannot believe that tomorrow will be 150 days since I started this thread build.

This could be the slowest build ever.

I am moving my tank home today because of the upcoming holidays. I just don't believe it would be a good thing to let the tank run for 4 days without attention.

The good news is I am finally going to stock it with a tailspot blenny. Someone local is selling his and I am adopting. I will get him Monday. This is another reason why I am taking the tank home.

Algae is starting to cover the rocks pretty bad, normal cycle of course but some cleaning will be in order too.

Perhaps next week I will go all out and frag my frag in order to finish the stocking.

1 fish + 1 polyp = done.

I still have not decided on lights. Out of all the equipment choices lights seem to be the hardest for me.

Maybe I will just run my PC until they burn out, replace with the other bulb I have, and add a blue LED that Agu was discussing over in the nano forum last week.

Maybe by then I will have a choice made.

Wow, this is a very cool build. Just came across it for the first time, but I am definitely going to be tagging a long. Congrats on the tailspot blenny, I have been hunting for one for months but nobody seems to get them in.

Enjoy the holidays, I look forward to seeing you start to stock this tank up!

man its been a while since i checked this thread out looks like youve made some progress it looks good i was wondering the same thing about the "hydraulic" cement or whatever it was that you used i think ill use it to make my magnetic frag rocks instead of what i planned on using. cant wait to see this full of coral it will look neat

Man Mike, this is the first time I've popped into this thread since your original couple of posts. You've done some great work, I really love how the rock work has turned out. It should look really cool once all the man-made rock turns live and starts getting growth on it :D.

Thank you everyone for posting.

The tank has pretty much been in a stand by mode because of the pH. I really was suprised about the pH and how long it took to come down but it is all good now.

Friday afternoon it took me about 20 minutes to drain and box everything up to take home and another 15 to set it back up.

I did get to weigh the rock walls and floor before I put water back in and it was a whopping 25 pounds. There was some water, maybe a liter, and the tank itself so maybe 20 - 22 pounds. If I add in the rock structures I made it is probably close to 30 pounds so if anyone does this expect heavy rocks.

It is now sitting in front of a 20h that is full of rock and water. I have been exchanging water over the weekend because I got my tail spot blenny today! Thank you Geoff.

Now I am finished fish stocking. Strange huh? One fish and you are done.

Maybe I will go all crazy this week and add a polyp of PH to the tank.

I know I know go slow.

Thanks for checking everyone.
