And so it begins

Kafudafish, could use a pic to see how your progress is going on your experiment

Any recent pics for us?Love the natural look of the scape

Hi there. Thank you for stopping by. I took some pictures last night and one or two of them I think are ok.

I will get them up later.

I was looking at some pictures from around Nov and things have changed.

Please stay tuned and have a great weekend.

Go enjoy your tank too!

Mike you have a fine looking build going on here. I like your rock work and cool little powerhead flow system.

I agree with these guys, post up some pictures!

This is one amazing build! I wish i had the time and knowledge to do something like this. I always wanted, but i just cant find time. I hope to see more pics on how things are progressing.

Thanks Mike for stopping by. Yes overall I am happy with the PH and I can see the flow when it spits bubbles into the display if the top off is needed. Again I don't mind those bubbles and I do believe there is benefit to them for the system. It works better since I extended the output by about 2 inches.

Kamao:

Thank you for your words. If you look at my post dates you will see just how long it took me to do this tank. I was not in a hurry and probably could have done it in a weekend to 5 days if I pushed things. But I decided I wanted to enjoy each part of the tank from thoughts in my head to on paper to actually building it. A few times I started getting frustrated at things and started to just do it to get it done but stopped and walked away.
I would say that from beginning to end it is probably 90% of the original idea. I had to change a few things along the way but I think it worked out better in the end instead of trying to force something if that makes sense.

As far as knowledge this is one of those try it and see how it comes out. If it is not perfect that is good too.

Nature is not perfect and I think we sometimes try and make it so and in the end we are unhappy with our results. I am by no means saying what I have done is something incredible but I am still happy with the tank (mostly ). And my wife told me she liked the tank. Unbelievable huh?

If you want some help or suggestions I would be more than happy to help. This is what the forums should be about.

As far as time goes I was going to post this Sunday morning but life got in the way (as it always does) and had to wait until now to post.

Bacon and waffles are very important to a 4 yo (and adults too). I mean who can resist the power of bacon?

Pics up soon.

Ok here are some pictures. Please be gentle with them. I really need to learn how to take better pictures. I figure I would also include some of my issues as well since we all deal with issues from time to time.

Taken back last Oct. I was having the dreaded surface scum. It would get bad every 3 days or so. I solved it by putting an airstone in the tank for a bit but decided to remove it due to the pump's hum. I solved this by putting an Aqua Clear 30 on the back for surface agitation and I put a piece of clear tubing on the MJ. As it turned out the nozzle was too short and even though I was pushing a large turnover it was hitting the back wall and the water was not being pushed down. I now have no issues.

My tailspot. I have looked for a replacement but still no luck. Of the dozen tubes it would use 4 of them throughout the day.

Onto the frag:

It started as a brown out of purple hornets. There were 3 polyps and now we are up to 11. It has colored up some but it is not to the grape kool aid color with yellow ring like you see. I figure once I get my lights they should improve.

Now:

You can see some changes but they still have a ways to go.

Finally a shot of the LR that I made. You can see the CA beginning.

Well I guess that is it. Thanks again.

Clown and Jarob:

Thanks for posting. It is good to know that people look.

Lets see:

Life has been very busy the second half of the month.

I did one 2 gal. WC on the 21. I got a large amount of detritus up. I was running late and dumped all WC water back in and I was suprised at how much more was in there. It looked like a sand storm or something. When I get some time I will drain water through some pillow fiberfill, dump, and repeat for a few times.

This tank has sort of changed some of my views on WC and mechanical filtration etc. To me the smaller the tank the more important these things can become.

I am up to 35 ml of Kalk water per day and the CA continues to spread. I counted over 200 spots on the rock.

Also I have had a polyp explosion in the last 2 weeks. I have gone from 12/13 - 18 polyps. I am ready for my little experiment but I almost don't want to bother the frag.

As I said I have been very busy but thought I would pass on this little bit of information. I took and passed my oral exams last Monday and one of my professors and I was discussing species and how molecular biology has influenced the name game.

I will have to ask him again the original reference but one of his professors (probably from the 1950's) said there are two rules in ecology in regards to species.

1. Two species can look alike but be different species.
2. Two species can look different but they can be the same species.

The problem is knowing which rule is being followed. Kind of fitting with all of our discussions on zoa species and color morphs etc.

Bubble algae is gone. I hope.

Pineapple sponge appeared so that is good.

I now have a mini colony of around 22 polyps.

This makes me not want to frag it to be honest but probably will for the growth experiment. I think I will wait until I hit the 27 - 30 mark though.

I don't know if it's been suggested, but if you do frag you should probably do it out of the middle. I've heard more often than not that the growth is quickest that way.

How did you remedy the bubble algae?

Thanks for stopping by.

Roger:

I have heard that too and thanks for the suggestion. I would think that the edge effect would be important. What I am doing is going to be a little different than a single one time cut. At some point I will do a write up and make things clear as mud.

Deec:

Thanks and I hope I won't disappoint.

Mucho:

I used to tooth pick to pop the BA off the rock and caught it with a dipnet. The bigger the bubble the easier it is to do and less likely to tear the bubble open releasing addition spores into the water column.

Though if one thinks about it, when a crab eats the algae it is doing just that.

So either not all BA is releasing the spores into the water column (just the ones with the dark green fluid vs. clear) or the crab eats the BA faster than it can reproduce.

Hey, whatever works my friend, just glad you were able to get to it. I still admire your dedication with this man. I'm still tagging along to the end.:thumbsup: 2 thumbs up.
