Anderson Family Reef - 1200 Gallon System

Those corals in the frag tank are what's left over from the 210 following a run in with AEFW'S. To be honest they have been an after thought during the build.

Last week I took the time to dip and treat all of them for a third time in preparation for deployment into the new tank. My confidence level is only at 80% at this time so they may remain in the frag/quarantine tank for a while longer...:strange:

Sweet setup. Love the acrylic work in the sump. Tagging along for updates. How about adopting a 40 year old son? Lol

Thanks for the comments!

jmking33 - Does the 40 year old son come with tank cleaning duties?

jsims08 - It's on the basement concrete floor... so far so good!

Seems really blue but it gives you an idea of what the tank and aquascape look like so far. The right hand side is not yet done just kind of tossed in there for now...

Ok, so my next purchase for the system will be some media reactors for carbon and phosguard/GFO.

Any recommendations? I'm looking at the GEO Reactors now.

Thanks in advance for your feedback...

I just ordered a Reef Octopus for Bio Pellets - A couple of people had good things to say about them. I also recently saw the Bashsea reactors and I kind of liked the look of those. But I haven't had my hands on either of them yet.

A friend runs a pair of Precision marine, and they work well for carbon - pelletized and rowa phos.

I ordered the biggest Reef Octopus Pellet reactor which is rated to hold 1500ml of pellets. Which is still undersized for my system, but if the effects are positive I can add a second one. For Carbon I use a Deltec FR. Which are really great reactors, I just can't justify their cost, or try to convince someone that a German plastic jar is worth 5x more than an American plastic Jar.

I don't use any GFO.

Thanks for the details! I will continue my research with your recommendations in mind. Your knowledge and experience amaze me! Thanks again!

Respect!
I was planning on a tank that size, but thigs changed :(
Now I'm running a system that's only half the size you got...

Your tank looks amazing... Sohal - the queen of effing everything! I have one too ;)

Very nice build your sump alone had me drooling. Love the videos you have taken of your tank. I will be following along to see how the coral color up once in the tank.

Each barrel is 100 gallons, one of salt water (left) and the other of RO/DI (right). The salt water one is a flow through from the main display and connected to the house drain. I can take the tank offline with the closing of a valve then open another valve on the bottom and drain 100 gallons of old salt water in just a few minutes. I then transfer the RO/DI water to the tank on the left for mixing the new salt water. After the water is mixed I then open the valve and flow the display water back through flushing the new salt water through the system.

I really like this idea but I have a few questions..Do you always have tank water flowing through or only when you are doing water changes? With that shape and size of the container will it be hard to keep clean? Id be worried about running tank water in it because of the extra build up that would happen. Also, do you worry about old water sitting in the closed lines why you are mixing saltwater and then 'turning' it back on and releasing this water into your tank?

I'm trying to set up a new sump system including a water change out. This gives me some ideas.

Good questions. I run tank water through one barrel all the time but if it ever was a problem I could easily isolate it, clean it, or even leave it empty until water change time... It's totally versatile. I have a utility sink with a sprayer that can be used to rinse out the barrel if it were ever to get dirty.

I think about the RO/DI tank water sitting in there stagnet but I now just fill up the tank when I'm planning on doing a water change...I just started doing this so I'll see how it goes...BigOldReef suggested to run a UV on the RO/DI tank to keep that water nice and clean. I'm planning on doing that in the near future...

Hope this helps! :fun4:
