Anemone ID please

I got this a week ago and have it in quarantine in a 10 gallon. I've been doing a 50% water change nightly with 250mg Ciprofloxacin. It was slightly deflated the first day but has not deflated since. The mouth is puffy with from 1/2" to 2" of smooth innards extruding.

First, what kind of anemone is it? The tips are tapered and somewhat pointy and second, how long should I continue the Ciprofloxacin?

I'd like to transfer it to my 29 gallon bio-cube once it no longer needs meds.

Looks like a mag. ( Heteractis magnifica )

Thanks nikon187, that was what it was sold as. The pointy tentacles caused my doubt.

Thanks Quickcord, I have a Kessil A350W on it now. The 29gallon has the big sponge filter plus 5 gallon water changes every other day. I have to keep an eye on the nitrates. I could also add a skimmer if needed. The anemone will eventually be moved to my 210 gallon.

Hey Mona... I'm pretty sure it's a magnifica. The tentacles do look a bit pointy for a mag, but the underside and color look right. It doesn't have white lines around its mouth so it's not a BTA, for which it's often mistaken. Actually, you'll know immediately that it's a mag (versus a BTA) when you introduce it to the clowns because they should take to it instantly.

If you've been treating with Cipro for a week, then I'd leave it in QT for a few more days just to observe. You can taper off water changes if you like. Looks like you've got an ammonia badge in the tank, so just keep an eye on that and you should be fine.

In terms of your 210, do you still have a lot of BTAs? If you still have a lot, you may want to consider running a lot of carbon in case there is allelopathy. IIRC, didn't you have a magnifica a few years ago, and it ended up not making it? Did you ever determine the cause? If not, I would not rule out allelopathy.

Thanks for the info!! I put three baby clowns that were getting picked on in with the Mag. It took a few days for them to go in but now they love it.

So, the puffy mouth isn't a reason to extend the Cipro treatment? It seems to still be expelling small clumps of fleshy junk and less of the dark pellets, though much less than last week.

I still have three BTA's but I did have the previous Mag for a year and 7 months with 14-20 BTA's at the time, so I am not too worried about alleopathy. In hindsight, it died shortly after a newly added sick Haddoni died. So, stupid me probably added bad anemone ju ju. I thought the sick Haddoni would benefit from being in a nice big stable tank with 400 watt halides.:headwalls:

Cant see what is wrong with that mouths from your picture.

For example mine is also still acclimating, but mouths are like a hill in the middle of disc during night - still closed.
And last pic during day when looking pretty - maybe if u provide enough light in QT you will see it in nice shape too.

As you can see, it is puffy with what should be inside that is out which is not great. So, I am wondering if this is still an acclimation issue or if it is something extended use of Cipro might help. Kessil A350W 9" above the anemone should be adequate light. The body is standing up pretty well now, but is does have a puffy thin skinned quality that is concerning:

I think you can stop Cipro treatment for now. If the mag deflates, then I would start it again. My hypothesis is that nems still have the infection with their inner tissue and are deflating to try to remove waste because they don't have enough energy to expel it.

Based on your explanation, I agree that it wasn't allelopathy because the mag lived for a long time with the BTAs. Sounds more like the cause of death was an illness that was transferred from the sick haddoni.

after 48 hours with no Cipro, the mouth is now fully closed. The anemone is further upright and looking good.

Interestingly, the baby clowns that I put in with the anemone are fat. Since I put very little food in the tank, I wonder what they are eating? These clowns were on death's door and laying sideways on the bottom of the grow out tank. Now they are extra fat and vibrant looking. It can only be something about being in their natural anemone that benefits them.
