anemone not looking so hot

Over the last day or two my anemone deflated and detached from his rock, he was in the back completely shriveled and I dug him out to put in a little glass cup in the front. He started to inflate again and even crawled out of the cup, all the way to the top of the aquarium but now he's attached to the back wall again completely deflated.

Is he dying? Ammonia is .1 ppm and nitrates are between 0 and .2 ppm.

I am brand new to all of this but mine does the same kind of stuff all of the time. He shriveled up and was upside down between the rocks last night and today he has moved to another rock and back to full size.

I dunno, I came home and he detached from the wall and went back to behind the rock in the sand again. I did the sniff test and he doesnt smell....but he doesnt look good at all. I had an anemone die on me about 4 years ago, so I know what it will smell like, but I was gone for the weekend and came back to the decayed shred of what was left. So I've never seen the full process.

That looks like a Condylactis passiflora (Florida condy) or something similar and they are photosynthetic and require fairly strong lighting. Those guys will usually roam around looking for good light and a spot where they can bury their base in a rock crevice for safety. They are fairly hardy but typically won't tolerate poor water quality for very long.

150 watt metal halide over 29 gallons. Ammonia was .1 and nitrates were 0-.2, Everything else is happy as a clam. I'm guessing he didnt like the shrimp I was feeding him.

Nothing but RO/DI water from a airwaterice dual home/reef unit.

Usually a very hardy, take him out of the tank and stomp on him kind of survival rate......

they like raw shrimp, small piece once a week...

but you never know!
