Anemone ripped in two, will he live?

Just as the title says. He was apparently stuck to two rocks and one of them fell why I was at work today. I came home and one part of him is stuck to the rock that fell and the other part is still holding on to another base rock. It appears the smaller part doesn't have any type of mouth, and the bigger part looks ok, except where the tear is.

So far both parts look ok, bubbles are still big and puffed up, but I am wondering if I should take it out of the tank or if it will possibly live. The bigger half did eat a small piece of fish I gave him, but he looks pretty brutalized.

Levels are:

1.025 salinity
0 ammonia
0 nitrites
5 ppm nitrates

yeah, he is unhappy he just got ripped in two. It is a newer tank but it was seeded with sand and rock from a well established tank. I am more curious if he can live being ripped in two or if I should remove any of the pieces.

The half with the mouth is on the move, he seems to be trying to get to a darker hidden location, so I am hoping he will make it. I think I might take the other piece out as it is starting to deflate and looks kinda bad. Not sure it will grow a mouth...

When bta's split they need part of the mouth and foot or they won't make it. The other half should be fine depending on tank conditions

This is what I've always heard as well. But if it were mine, I'd keep them both and watch closely. I'm not so sure the one without a mouth can't form one and survive. PLEASE keep us informed as to what you do and how it turns out.

Thanks for sharing.

both halves will make it if the water quality is good, the mouthless side will form a mouth when it closes up. dont listen to these people here telling you its not going to make it. im doubting the rock falling was the cause, i bet you it was naurally splitting and its own pulling itself apart made the rock fall.

No one said it would not make it. The op said himself if was footed to both rocks so, sounds like the rock was the cause. If it naturally split , both halves would have par of the mouth?

I just would hate to see someone take this as fact when its not the truth. BTA's will form a new mouth even when one isnt present. i've had one get sucked in a power head and with a very damaged oral disk i split the anemone to remove the bad side, the split was uneven and the bigger not chewed up half ended up with a full mouth and full foot, the smaller mangled peice had no mouth and no foot just straight up guts and some of the column, after 2 days it had reconnected itself to form a new mouth and after about 1 month it had grown a new foot and you wouldnt be able to tell the 2 halves apart.

well so far this morning both parts are looking well. The part with no mouth opened up quite a bit and the bubble tips look good. The larger half has also taken to hiding, but looks pretty good. I will try feeding the part with a mouth today and see if he eats again. I think they both might make it at this point.

Thats awesome to hear. Hold off on the feeding until they look healed up (a week or two) they probably wont take the food anyway right now.

IME BTA’s will form new mouths when one isn’t present. I’ve had my RBTA for 13 years and it doesn’t always naturally split down the middle so both halves get part of a mouth. Many times the split isn’t even and one part has a mouth and the other smaller part doesn’t and the part that doesn’t have a mouth always forms a new one. Also I’ve had clones get sucked into MP40 powerheads and sustain amazing amounts of damage and recover no worse-for-wear other than being quite a bit smaller when fully healed. You should keep the piece without a mouth. If you can maintain good stable water conditions it should recover.

A) I love to hear good news!
B) I really appreciate your keeping us in the loop.
C) Looks like you have a new member of your family. :hb2:

That's great to hear! Sorry about my info. I was just giving what I had read about. And when I had a split in which my nem barely had a mouth formed. It never ate and wasted away. So it was the truth as I knew it. But what I am learning about these bubble tips is that they have amazing healing powers when in the right conditions. I will be following to see the good work.

I was trying to get a picture of the mouth today, but he was doing a good job of hiding it. It looks really odd and it is huge and goes to his foot. It looks really large on him. I can't see the other half really well, he is on the back of a rock that is somewhat hidden, I can just see his pretty bubble tips swaying around.

Both seem to be doing really well, and if I can I will get a good pic, but I have to wait until they move around a bit or see if I can get my buddy's really nice camera.

Don't feel bad, you shared your experience in an effort to help. That's what most of us are doing here. Hang in there, stay involved and keep on learning. That's what it's all about.

So far both parts are still alive. They spend most of the day deflated, but both recently moved out into the light. The larger side that started with the mouth is doing much better, his bubbles seem to inflate quite a bit larger and for more time in the day. The other side has a mouth, but is still healing. The clowns were feeding them the other day, they seem to take food pretty well.
