anemone?

hi i got myself 2 clownfish and an anemone today along with some other corals, the anemone has curled up in a ball in the last 10 minuites, is that anything to worry about? also how long will it be untill the clownfish go to the anemone? thanks

Did you acclimate the anemone to the new water would be my first question. Secondly, what kind of anemone is it that you have? I own a BTA, and when I first purchased it, acclimated it, and placed it in my tank, I walked around, found a spot to attach itself to the rock, then curled up a bit. So this may be normal behavior from my personal experience. Just keep an eye on it and your water parameters as well as flow. It really does help to know what kind of anemone you have though.

How long has your tank been up and running? What kind of anemone are we talking about? What type of lighting do you have and what size tank?

the tank has been running for about 1 month, all the tests are fine and its under a 150w giesemann. the tank is 350 litres and i have got 4000 lph running at the moment. everything else is fine. thanks

Your anemone will most likely die because your tank is not even close to being called "established" yet. Your tank just finished cycling.

Anemones need tanks that have been up and running for AT LEAST 9-10 months. This is because of stability. Older more established tanks will not have as much fluctuating water parameters as a newer one no matter how much planning you put into your tank.

When you say all parameters are fine, exactly what parameters are you talking about? Salinity, pH, Calcium, Alk, Nitrites, Nitrates, Ammonia, temperature, Mg? Go into a little bit more detail please.

By the looks of it, you have a deflated LTA. (M. Doreensis). Its not looking very good. I would return it to your LFS before it dies. How did it look at the lfs?

the test are. and the anemone is starting to come back out now. thanks

salinity 1.023
ph 7.9
nitrites 0
ammonia 0
nitrates 10
calcium 400
temp 79

I would raise your pH a hair and your salinity a hair too. Your tank being brand new is still a big issue.

ok thanks for your help. the bloke in the shop should have told me about the anemone because he knew that i had just set it up because he helped me do it.

Thats someone thats trying to make money. Its either they have the knowledge and do not tell you or they know nothing. Never trust what your LFS says.

There are a few LFS's that I trust, but that comes with experience too. The best thing you can do in this hobby is research each item you'd like to put in your tank before you buy. Then you have a better idea of what you're in for, what to expect, how things should look when you're ready to buy, and the best benefit, you'll know which people at which stores know what they're talking about and are willing to share the info with you.

I think if you can take it back, that would be best at this point for the nem, to me it's not worth the risk, but that's just my opinion.
Another option would be finding someone in your area that has an established mature tank and getting it to a home that may be better suited for it. A lot of the local reefers in my area will buy or trade merchandise with each other. That's also a great way to get to know the people in your area that are into the hobby too - they're also a great source of information.

This is also a good place to ask questions, get answers, and research the things you'd like for your tank. Welcome aboard!!

If I were you, I would take the anemone back to the shop, along with the other corals. No tank is ready for corals or anemones after one month. It's not your fault, most people do trust their LFS. If I were you, I would keep the clowns, they should be fine and they do not have to have an amenone to be happy, and take the corals and anemone back, wait about 4 more months and then go purchase what you want (but not any sps corals, softies would be fine, xenia is a good one to start with, antheia or zoas also)

I agree with reef4fun.
That nem looks pretty stressed.
your tank should be at least 6mo b4 nem, and really more like 9mo-year.

hi thanks for all your advice, i have decided to take all my corals back tommoro, hopefully they will take them back. the anemone has been moving around the tank all day which means it cant be happy even though it does look better. is there any corals i can start with or do i have to wait for the tank to muture? thanks

Like mentioned above, when your tank is about 4 months old, try some Xenia and other soft corals. In this hobby patience is a virtue. You can't expect to rush things or you will get bad results.

Certain corals (not most corals) will be fine. Some corals even survide cycling of a tank. Anemones certainly will not do well in a new tank. If you have a list or pictures of your corals, some of us can advice if they will be OK in a new tank. Don't try to change anything quickly. This can only lead to trouble.
And don't trust LFS unless they have money back guarantee if you coral or fish died if you follow their advices
