Another New SPS Tank

So a quick update with my observations after my weekly maintenance.

Phospates (0.13) and Nitrates (0.75) keep going up but apart of some annoying algae I think the corals are looking better, I can see more growth in a few of the corals as well as stronger deeper colours.

I made a few changes in the internal circulation as just realised the Gyre is a bit too strong and I was damaging a couple of my colonies, as well as modified my Radions to bring it to 100% in all the colours with the exception of the white ones (50%), I'll let you know in a few weeks on the results.

All ready now to run full Fauna Marin Ultralith system, I'll start running it in a couple of weeks once I'm back from holidays (full week of well deserved diving!!), I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

And here just before and afters of the 4 frags I started with, the rest of my colonies are wild caught and I haven't really seen major noticeable growth but hope it changes with the weeks.

I'm pretty bad with names so I just know them by "the green one", "the red one", "the spike one", but if you know the actual names would be good to know them.

This one was full brown back in December:


And this is how it looks as of today, developing some nice red color, hopefully after I start the Zeo it will lose more of the brown and get a more intense color:

This is one of my favourite ones, very intense green.

A lot of branches, a nice intense green and growing pretty quick until 4 days ago that got too close to the bright green on the right and lost the battle (meaning lost a full branch):

into this fast growing kind of blue-tip piece:

Started to develop blue-tips specially since the last month when the load of fish started:

The other green one on the right is a hydnophora it's actually an LPS very powerful sting it kills everything it touches and grows very fast be careful since it will also shoot out branches and quickly be a nuisance.

Thanks a lot Franky, I think you are right with the names, I just googled and they look exactly like them. About the Hydnophora sadly you are right as well, one of my SPS can testify on that, it burned half of it in a matter of a few hours, I need to relocate it now but it is well incrusted to the rock already

Is teco tk500 really silent ?

I think it's not too bad, I don't really have a reference point as this is my first chiller but it is not overly noisy, I live in an apartment and the tank is next to my bedroom and normally what I hear is the tank overflow more than anything else.

Hahaha YES something like that prices are cheap here compared to what I had to pay back in Colombia. You can get SPS here as cheap as $20 dollars and some of the nicest ones normally no more than $50 (Australian dollars).

The problem here more than the money is the space in the aquarium to fit all those colonies

Thanks mate, I just started with Ultralith system, I have an algae problem right now but hopefully in a couple of weeks things will look better, I'll post some new photos then to compare growth and colours

Just wanting to know what you thing of the TK500 chiller.
I'm getting a reefer 350 and it's around 345 lt all up and will be needing a chiller as I'm up in Cairns QLD.
How did you find the chiller worked on your tank? Did it have to work it's butt off or did it chille the tank with ease. Your tank has more water volume than the one I'm getting.
Also are the very loud when running.

Hi Daz,


This is my first chiller so I don't really have another reference point but so far I'm happy with it, below is an image of the last 7 days where the last 4 have been pretty hot (for Sydney).

In general I think either the feeding pump is too weak or the chiller is a bit too small for me as in hot days it reaches over 26 degrees (while I have it configured to run between 24.5 and 25.5) but I don't think you'll have a problem as you have less water volume than me.

I have it in my living room so it looks quite nice next to the tank, in terms of noise personally I think is reasonably quiet, I normally hear more the LEDs fans than the actual chiller.
