Another option for red bugs

I just came across about 60 frags from this guy whose tank crashed. All different types of acros and a few monti's, unfortunately the acros have red bugs. I'm planning on putting them though a 2 month QT process with weekly dips of Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer and I'll most likely do a few dips in Revive as well.

I'll be using 20 ml per cup of saltwater as discussed in this thread for 5-7 minutes at a time.

I'm very nervous about doing this, and I guess I'd like to know if you guys would do them all at once, 20 at a time, or just a few at a time. thanks in advance for the help. Some of the frags could be very nice and I really am concerned about dipping so many in a day.

any thoughts? This is my first experience with these pests.

Which version are you planning to use? I use the concentrate version and don't use nearly 20ml/cup. With them being in quarantine under observation, I would stay conservative on the dosage.
As far as number of corals at one time, I've done 5 no problem and could/would hae done more ifi had more corals to treat at the time. All depends on how big your container is.

divewsharks- thank you for the reply. I am also going to be using the concentrate version so maybe I'll rethink my dosage considering they'll be in QT like you said. I was going off of what I read on the previous page. I do have a bunch of containers, so maybe I'll try doing 10 or so at a time after my initial test. thanks

For all who have wondered about dosing their tanks the answer is absolutely DO NOT dose your tank.
Here is the reason why it is a big NO NO:

I lost all but 1 fish yesterday due to my stupidity.;( I prepared the solution of Bayer to dip the new acquisitions in, and sat it on the tank's brace with the canopy holding it in place. It was safe, until I reached for it to put it on top of a bucket I placed on the floor in front of the tank so as not to splash any of it in to the tank while placing a large rock with the shrooms & leather on it that I received as a gift.
Well, when I reached for it the bowl slipped in to my tank spilling half the contents into the tank. I didn't know what to do in that moment of panic, but then decided that all would be okay because my tank is 155 gallons, and what spilled was a mere 6 cups of the solution. I just kept an eye on the corals, and inverts ready to pull them out in to the bucket of freshly mixed salt water that I would be using to replace the water I was taking out of the tank during acclimation & dipping. Well, about 15 to 30 minutes later I see my PT spinning around on his tail, then the Desjardinii, followed by my Majestic, and then the rest of the tangs. I raced to rinse 1 or 2lbs of GAC in a nylon bag to throw that into the return section of my sump. Drained about 30 gal. of water, and refilled the tank. It was to little to late. I lost all but 1 tiny little fish. Fortunately, and I thank God that the first fish into my tank after the monster Sandy that I got from GeorgeG (tail spot blenny) popped out of a hole in the rocks while I was telling a friend what I had done.

Now you all know what happens if you dose your tank.:( It will be total death. This was only about 6 cups of the solution that was 20 ml per cup in 155 gallons.
Looks like snails, crabs, chitons, limpets, and at least the brittle starfish made it though. Corals also appear to not have been damaged.

Sorry about your loss bro. On the brite side of things you nuked the red bugs. I have been using this with great results since the OP put up this thread. Its a great tool for dips.

Sorry for the loss. So I guess this answers my question as far as treating the tank. So if I have established colonies I need to cut them off and dip them one at a time? I knew this was going to be a pain.

thanks for the info

Derek

Not necessarily one at a time, but they all have to be dipped. More than once too over time. And any ecrustation left on the rock after you remove the colonies must be killed off. What pest are you fighting?

I was of the understanding that all of the Bayer Insect Killer had the word Concentrate on it. Would you share the dosage you used with the Concentrate version?

Might be good if someone could also post the dosage for the non-concentrate so it's clear.

Thanks in advance.

Can't remember who posted the 20ml to 1 cup.:( I followed that recommendation with some new Acros. Didn't kill the coral, but it surely bleached them. I then tried 12 to 1 same results - bleached corals.:( Going to the original dosage of 10ml to 1 cup. It has taken the corals several weeks to a month to start regaining their color back. At least the colors do come back.

I've been doing an 8 min. dip followed by 3 rinses before placing back in to the tank. Wondering if the 8 minutes is to long?

5ml per liter kills red bugs, not sure about AEFW. I brought home some red bug infested frags, and it worked with a 10 minute dip. I don't think you need to mix it so strong.

Above is the formula I used. Not doing that again. Going to do the 10ml to 1 cup next time I use it.

WOW, just saw this! I apologize; I do not use 10ml per 1/2 cup, extreme typing error!!
I've done as high as 10ml/2cups; but have also used 2.5ml/2cups with good success against AEFW(as in them dying per post #363 of this thread).

No biggie. Most sps corals dipped in the 10ml per 1/2 cup are recovering nicely!;)

I'm doing 1 cup Bayer per 1 Gallon of tank water using the silver label Bayer with no ill effects to the corals for 10 minutes. Even my hawkins was completely fine

The original Bayer the OP posted:
BayerCompleteinsectkillerforuseinthereef-1.jpg
is no longer available in any of the Home Depot, Lowes, or any other hardware store or garden centers in my area.:(

Order it online at

Whisper the original poster (pioneer of this) said "approximately 1.5-2 cc in 300 cc of tankwater"

I found this on Youtube.com

this is 8mL to 1 liter /quart of tank water (forward to 1:27 minutes into the video)

You do not have to mix this too strong.

If you read through the whole thread, he continued to experiment with different dosages for different pests as his original trials were not effective enough for stronger pests. Ended up using much higher concentration than he started with.

I dose 4ml per 2 cups several times to get rids of white bugs on frogspawn. I've been using that ratio as a precautionary dip since then so far several sps and lps have not been affected.

The only thing I noticed is when I did the frogspawns I ddi not rinse them before putting them back in, and later I saw a lot of pods stumbling around the tank. 180g worth of water. I dont think it killed the big ones though. I'll be using a rinse dip for now on though.

Hello everybody,

After reading 26 pages and 637 posts, I am confused about the product and dosage to use, to kill RB and AEFW.

What is the product, dosage and dipping time to use, to kill RB and AEFW?

Bayer Complete Insect Killer for soil and turf Concentrate ?

or

Bayer Home Pest with Germ Killer ?

Thank you
