Another...your tank can be dangerous thread.

Sorry to hear about your finger. I remember just the other day reading the post of "how many wear gloves before putting their hands in the tank." A lot of people do not. I've been in the hobby for several years and it's opened my eyes to alot. I'm a Biology major going into Pre-Med and am very aware of all the things living inside of my reef tank. I think that i'm going to go out and buy some gloves today. Better safe than sorry right. Your thumb was looking promising. Give it some time and it should be back to "somewhat normal" in a few months. Just try and stay clear of your tank/working out side with people who are careless. OK, I'm scared straight! That freaked me out just to see the pictures. I can't even imagine how it must have felt to watch it happen to your own body. You've probably saved me a similar experience since I'm really bad about putting my hands in the tank even though I try my best to avoid it when not necessary. Ironically, I've always been more worried about getting my fish sick than causing any harm to myself.

I don't think there is any reason to be overyly terrified.
I do think wearing gloves at all times, when your hands are in the tank, is a good thing for many reasons, not just protection.
However, I believe what happend to me was a freak occurrence. :)

Wow, almost 4 years since the last post and almost 6 since it started.
FYI, my thumb is still ugly and I will NEVER be a hand model. :(

Wow, just read this thread for what I'm guessing is the first time.

I only read the first page so I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but the OP said he was treated with Rocephin-

In case anyone wants to print this for when they contract a similar condition from their tank, Rocephin is the brand name for ceftriaxone, a very useful broad-spectrum IV antibiotic which is indicated for the treatment of skin infections as well as septicemia, among other things like gonorrhea and Lyme disease.

So tell your ER doctor you want some :lol:

PS OP, very glad you decided to go in when you did. I'm frugal as well and really try to wait until I don't have to pay the ER bills. But they weren't kidding, you absolutely would have been a candidate for amputation if you had waited.
