I am thinking about ordering some PC lights off of aquatraders.com.Has anybody ordered from them before?Anything bad I should know about?

They aren't great products and they tend to have horrible customer service. They aren't a company that most would recommend unless that is all you can afford.

There pump's have lasted over a year, no probs, start up every time. There skimmers work well as well to an extent. They are overated but modded easily and nearly free. As for the lights and uv's, i've heard there pc's work fine, but there MH ballast's need to be replaced. And i've not had any negative CS like some say. Look at the woot thread adn the lights thread about odyssea.

I have some aquatraders (odyssea) items and they have worked fine so far. Not the best equipment, but serviceable and very cheap (even with the ridiculous shipping costs).

Forgot about that part, thanks for the reminder Kody.....the shipping is highly rediculous! lol Around 18bux for a pump. Would never be more than 10 from cali to NY

Shipping was high from Aquatraders, but my CPR knock-off was CHEAP, even after adding in the shipping.

PC Bulbs are great, and inexpensice as well. Just wish they sold T5's now also.

same here i ordered from them about 3 times, i own about 4 powerheads, and other stuff, in fact they are the only place i can get my 130watt pc from that dont cost an arm and leg, shipping is high but you cant beat the low prices. never had a problem with sc, yes english is broken and where i work at i can understand anyone with broken english so talking to them is not a problem.

discount codes? I doubt they exist. They sell everything more expensive at the local store, most of the time 25% more expensive. I used to live 2 blocks from them (now is more like 20min from them) and they made me buy stuff online and I have it ship to get it at a cheaper price including shipping.

I want to make something clear most people talk about them like they are manufacturers, they are not, and they are retailers of a Chinese manufacturer.
Their cust service is horrible, and the products are not good. I got a MH fixture from them and as soon as I turned on it was smoking, they replaced it and the new one lasted only a year before dying. I've also had pc for my sump from them and also die after a year or so. When I had their power heads in my tank, everytime I put my hands in the water I got shocked, which was pretty scary. I went the cheap way when I started my tank and ended up spending all that money plus the money to buy good stuff.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND Odyssea products nor this retailer (aquatraders)

I use them on several tanks for several years. No real problems. Very poor service if you try to cantact them though and I have received a bad bulb or two.

You will get a widely varying opinion on their products depending on whether the products were recently bought or were bought several years back. The newer models offer a great value compared to other very similar manufactures. There can be a significant cost savings over other brands that are almost identical. Of course, if a product is unsafe, then any price is too much to pay, and no cost savings is worth it...

That being said, I think they have made great strides in the past year, maybe 2 years towards better quality. Almost all the people who post about "smoking" fixtures, etc. bought their stuff more than 2 years ago... the older models truly were a crapshoot; with an unacceptable amount of defects and / or safety issues.

And I think you have to balance overall cost against the customer service and shipping issues.

In my case, I bought the 72" 3 X 250 DE MH and 4 X 96 PC combo fixture. I paid $579 including the shipping cost. Contrast that with $1100 for a Coralife Aqualight Pro with the same output and features (in fact the Odyssea is basically a copy of the Aqualight...) That's including all bulbs, legs , etc and that's quite a difference in price. And brands like Aquamedic, Outer Orbit, Hamilton started at $1450 for the same output fixture and went (way) up from there - all the way to over 2K for Maristar and Guisemann units...

On the MH fixtures the MH ballasts are underpowered and should be replaced. On my setup there are 3 of them; it cost $360 to replace them with IceCaps (one of the best brands)... so now the fixture really costs about $940 - still $160 less and now just as good. Other than that nothing else needs to be changed. So you have a really decent fixture that was at least 15% cheaper than the cheapest competition. Some people feel that "having" to replace the ballasts automatically means the fixtures "suck"; most people who actually bought one have been very pleased with what they got for the $$$ - even after swapping the MH ballasts.

There is a WAY HUUUGE thread somewhere on here - over 100 pages and still going. I would say that opinion runs about 90% positive and 10% negative on Odyssea / Aquatraders...

In your case you were looking at a PC only fixture... all I can say is my setup has close to 400w of PC lights in it and it has worked fine for the 5 months I have had it. No bad bulbs or ballast issues, etc.

In the Final Analysis I would give it a

This is a reason why you should always have a grounding wire in your tank/sump.

can you explain alittle more abouit the ground wire, i have never had a problem but i like to gather as much info as i can pm me or post pictures of a gound wire in sump i dont understand what you are complatly tyalking about

Just a question....I also have the 72 fixture, but is it really needed to replace the ballasts? Can't we just use the one that came with it?

thanks

A grounding wire is simply an electrially conducting metal wire that is connected to a known ground.

It gives any stray voltage a place to go beside your water.

Can someone with solid knowlege of electricity weigh in on ground probes? I know I've read that the use of a probe can actually help to complete a circuit and in so doing make any stray voltage more dangerous. If this is true it would seem the only safe course is gfi outlets particularly for equipment that is in the water.
