An SLA is about as safe as a battery can get, this is what backups your home alarm, operates a childs Power Wheels toy, and it is what is running any commercial UPS you purchase so they are fairly safe for household use. However, when I was in High School one year my science project was to build an electric car, I used an SLA battery, I had a wiring mishap and the batteries caught fire(I tried 2 in series for more power but it was switched so I could set 12 or 24V and the switch was wired wrong). Nothing is impossible, I would take reasonable precautions to keep them dry and protect the terminals and be sure they are wired correctly, in general as long as you don't short the terminals or wiring, it should be completely safe, but salt creep is a potential cause of a short.
