Any tricks to getting Angels to eat???

RBU1

Moving on Up
I have a small Africanus Angel that has been in QT for 2 weeks. He does not touch anything....Sometime I will see him grab a mysis but then spit it out. He doesnt touch brine, mysis or anything. I put a clam on a half shell in the tank and he picks at it but not overly aggressive. Not sure what if anything else I can try to get this guy to eat. For what its worth I watched him eat prior to me getting him. I just think maybe the copper in the QT is keeping him frim eating......Any thoughts suggestions appreciated.

immediately coppering any fish that comes into QT is a bad idea. This will definitely lower their appetite. IMO you need to remove the copper and get the water back.

Once the fish starts eating and is eating very well for 1 week, then start to medicate.

I would bet your notion about the copper is correct. If you were gonna treat him with copper a total of three weeks and he still looks healthy you could finish the treatment then run carbon. If he is starting to look thin you may want to remove it sooner and see if he will eat then restart the copper once he is eating well. The clams you mentioned usually work well so i would continue with that. The other thing that can cause them to not eat is flukes.HTH Kieth

The only thing I would add to Chris's comments is that angels, in general, are best "left alone"...... the harder you try to encourage him, the chances are the more you'll scare him away. Offering a little but often is best..... and watch water quality..... and retreat well out of sight to give him a chance to investigate.

I am not suggesting that you add dither fish to your QT (at least not yet) but in the past I have sometimes found that angels don't recgnise what we offer as food..... until they see other fish eating it, and then quickly catch on.......

I think the copper comment is right on, IMO copper does bad things to a lot of angels. Get the water back and present feeding opportunities, I would have a grid feeder with a gel cube and a nori clip going at all times. I have had good luck getting angels to feed on NLS pellets as well. I dont know what brand of mysis you are using but most angels cannot resist PE mysis IME. Dipping for flukes might be a good idea as well, but I would definately get rid of the copper.

WOW thanks for all the comments....

I do have more fish in the QT then the africanus. There is a multicolored pygmy and 2 coris wrasse. All other fish are eating great.

When I purchased the Africanus he was eating mysis and was already in cupramine at .25 I did increase the level in my tank to the suggested .5 and will keep it at that level for another 3 weeks. I would rather treat with copper then introduce something to my main tank. I just got a Chrysurus angle thru a 4 week copper treatment and he was eating perfect the entire time while in QT. After I put him in the main display he went on a food strike and did not eat for a week. Last night he eat like a pig. Now today he will not touch food again. I think angels are some weird fish.................and I could be worrying over nothing........I will continue to offer him clams and oysters and hopefully that will keep him satisfied enough till I get him to the main tank that will be copper free.

The suggestion by the OP wasn't to not treat, it was to wait to treat until you are sure the fish is eating well.

I have heard of other people offering live clam on a half shell to picky eaters, but not sure if this particular fish is big enough to be interested in that or not.

he picks at it...

Large angels can go for quite a long time without eating. I have a 12" Blueface that was about 6" when I bought him. I am not exaggerating; that fish ate absolutely nothing for almost three months. I was certain he was a goner, then out of the blue he started eating.

I mostly agree but I do not advocate medicating without a problem to be solved. Quarantines are for observation and acclimation. Hospital tanks are for medicating.

Sometimes a fish will have a parasite that is not visible. I think treating is the safe thing to do.

On the advice of Copps, I would advocate not medicating a new angel (at least for something that is sensitive like a regal, don't know how sensitive your H. africanus is). What I did with success for 2 regals was put them into a dark (only indirect light with the majority of the container being in shadows) acclimation tank that was connected to my system and that had rock and sand in it. They were the only inhabitants, although I did add a juvenile ocellaris to the first regal I put in there. This was a 50 gallon rubbermaid stock tank, so the sides are dark and there is only a small sliver of light that spills over into the tank from the display next to it. I offered all foods that I feed to my display with any regularity and also offered clams on the half shell. I continued to do this until it began eating pellets regularly and kept each regal in there for probably 2 months to get them eating. I did this first with a small blue belly and then did the same with a yellow belly (only reason the blue belly didn't spend another month or 2 in there was because I needed the room for the yellow belly). I periodically did freshwater dips on them but never did any other sort of medicating. This got them eating, got them used to my tank water, and then when they were eating whatever I offered and had gained weight, I added them to the display during "night" hours so that the majority of the fish were out for the evening. Did this with both of my regals and both are doing well today and eat whatever I offer.

I am not sure what is going on......I think the fish are trying to stress me out.....

My chrysurus angel that had been in copper for 4 weeks and now in the main display for 2 weeks. Stopped eating for a week. Then yesterday he eat like a pig. Now today he is not eating again....

The chrysurus along with 2 black and white ocellaris are my first fish back in my main display after a 3 month fallow period. I don't undestand this fishes behavior at all......one day he looks and acts fine the next he hides in the back of that tank and does not come out. He stops eating then starts again......I don't get it.....................I think fish are going to be the death of me!!!!!!!!!!!!

I assume the Africanus is 2" (would love to get one that size or smaller myself) and the Chrysurus is 4-5" correct? I find it better to just feed small amount of variety of food every feeding till the fish starts to eat and during this time don't worry too much whether it eats or not. Some of my finicky angels takes anywhere from 5-7.5 weeks before eating.

As for the Africanus it's better to QT on its own or the least separate the rest with eggcrate. When you have 4 fishes in a QT it's not QT anymore but rather close to a community tank and may cause lots of stress. Hey, I'm guilty of that myself at times but I've come to the realization individuals tends to eat prepared food quicker while in QT. I would also agree to perform a fresh water dip to eliminate possibility of flukes. Good luck with your new additions!

Just my 2 cents.
