Any tricks to getting Angels to eat???

I picked up some eggcrate today and am going to divide the tank. I was also looking real close at the africanus and it appears there might be something near the very top of his gill. I am not positive because its hard to tell. I have prazipro but have never used it and am not sure what I should do. How should I treat him? Keep in mind he is in a tank with copper so I guess I would have to do a dip.....Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

How long and what types of angels have you kept long term?

Were in NJ are you. I am way south near Delaware.

I'm in Central Jersey. During the move in Sep 07 from Flushing NY to Jersey the system crashed and lost 90 percent of everything and had to start over which I upgraded to a 180g. No long term to speak about here. In Oct 07 I got 6 FAs and a pair of Semilarvatus of which I still have one and 3 FAs (lost 3 FAs earlier in year to velvet). I have a pair of Watanabe from Nov 07, and a pair of female Bellus from Feb 08. I've a pair of Meredithi between 18 and 14 months, Bandit for 14 months, and the other angels are from the last 2-12 months.

Cupramine and prazi can be used together. You treat prazi once and it lasts 5-7 days IIRC.

OK thanks....you have done this? I asked hikari about mixing a prazipro treatment with Cupramine and they told me not to mix stuff....That got me scared....

If I use the prazipro in the tank with the cupramine just follow the instructions on the prazi bottle?

Ok now I am getting concerned about the africanus. Would not even look at the clam now. Even swimming behavior and breathing is abnormal. I am removing the copper to see if that has anything to do with it. Keep your fingers crossed for me and I am open to any suggestions.

Yup. I've used them together, just follow the prazi directions. Maybe go easy on the copper next time. They might not have really been in .25 like you were told, because the level can fluctuate.

So use some carbon get the copper out, maybe do a water change. See if you get a feeding response. Then treat with prazi following the directions. If your fish fatten up then continue the copper.

But like everyone has said in the future make sure the fish are nice a PLUMP before starting copper. It can be very demanding on the fish.

Hopefully you will be fine after the copper is removed.

Maybe try some live foods or different foods than the clam too, like live blackworms or live mysis shrimp.

Also, little side note question, just curious is your africanus still very blue, if not what are the colors like? Maybe you answered that already sorry if you did.

Scott Michael has his Angels and Butterflys book too.

And there is a good book on lots of Angels, but not too much on care, which is "Angelfishes : a comprehensive guide to Pomacanthidae / Helmut Debelius, Hiroyuki Tanaka, Rudie H. Kuiter."

But a good book on QT would be nice too.... I have been trying to get the book "Disease in Marine Aquarium Fish by Gerald Bassleer" http://www.amazon.com/Diseases-Mari...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262403398&sr=1-2 but last time I ordered it from amazon I ordered it from someone else and got sent a German one, needless to say I wasn't happy and had to return it. Haven't reordered it yet though.

Well the afficanus was dead this morning.........

Dont know if it was the copper or something else.....

You think you are doing the right thing and still get kicked in the balls.......

3) All fish must be treated for flukes/internal parasites nowadays. This was not needed 5-10 years ago, but it is now. Not sure why. I use Prazi and then Metronidazole, and feed with Metronidazole food.

I agree. Not a single fish goes into any of my displays unless treated with Prazipro. I can't tell you how many fish I have seen come in with flukes, especially angels. And just because an angel looks good or doesn't show signs of flukes doesn't mean it doesn't have any.

I see more issues with parasites affecting fish than I do medications like Cupramine and Prazipro. If nothing else I would have at least done a FW dip on the fish.

Well the afficanus was dead this morning.........

You were doing something right. QT is right.

With Angels I have learned the hard way that I must PraziPro first.

If they show signs of ich I then start them on Cupramine.

I have had no problems treating with Cupramine and PraziPro at the same time.

Hope this helps...

RBU1,

Very sorry for your loss. We all had a share of this problem in this hobby. We could all be doing the right thing from our end but the key to start with is a healthy specimen. I saw the 2" Africanus twice that month and I was very tempted both times along with the 8" misbar Regal. I know the Regal was not eating after purchase but not sure what its fate is now. I hope the owner of the other Africanus will shed some light on how that juvie is doing.

OK well I am in the process of still removing the copper. I have a multicolored pygmy and 2 small coris wrasse in the 125 treatment tank. I think in a couple days the copper should be removed. They were in cupramine for 14 days what should I do now? continue to remove the copper? Bring the copper back up and continue the full 4 week cupramine treatment on the remaining 3 or remove the copper and continue to observe for the next 2 weeks.....

I really want to make sure I am doing everything in my power not to introduce ich back in my main display.

Or remove the copper and look for another fish like a tang....Acclimate the tang to the tank wait for it to start eating then bring the cupramine back up and leave the 3 current fish in for a full treatment??????

I picked up a nice looking Blue Angel today at my local store. He is a monster in the 7" range....I have almost all the copper removed from the QT and I will get it all out and see how the new guy along with the current fish eat. If all goes well with the eating I will slowly raise the copper back till I get to .5 at that point I will leave the fish at .5 for 4 weeks....Keep your fingers crossed for me....

I do this too, I dont feed the metro often but all of my fish get a "tune up" every few weeks. I have seen this product literally bring fish back from the dead as long as they were eating. I use the blue lagoon brand and have found it effective.

I am very sorry to hear about your fish.

Good luck! By Blue Angel do you mean Holacanthus bermudensis?

I would maybe take a rest from buying fish. Make sure the ones you have make it, and get all the fish you currently have properly QTed. Ideally it would be one fish in the QT.

In a normal size QT I would agree with you but a 125 is larger than most peoples aquariums.

I am not going to add anything else. I would like some opinions on how to handle my treatment going forward. Should I use prazipro then cupramine?
