anyone else get squirted in the eyes with palytoxin?

Prototype

Zoa Collector
i was fragging some palys the other night and i got squirted in the eyes.
i quickly rinsed my eyes out a few times, the next morning both of the left sides of my eyes were red. Today, one eye is completely red and the other is still half red, and both are glassy. i look very stoned, which is not very good when you work in the health field. i feel fine, and my vision is normal. i've been reading about this and have been getting mixed info: people have gone blind or some have been fine after a week or so.

so i just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this?

There are some corals that have a more extreme effect then others. I have a bunch of mocha colored palys that grow like crazy in my tank. If I so much as touch them, I get an infection on my fingers. Most of my other corals do not have that effect.

Hey Pro

keep flushing eye and drink water to flush anything out

had it get in a cut once..... after that i went FULL BSI LOL

i have been squirted in the eye with a common paly around 2pm on a saturday, and by 10pm that night i was in the ER because one side of my face was swollen the eye was puffed up, red, leaking fluid and vision was very blurry. i told the doctor what kind of toxin i had gotten in my eye, and all he did was give me eye drops and said if it gets worse come back :thumbdown, it took almost a week with the eye drops to get back to completely healed. good luck and be very cautious, i would still go and get some eye drops, just to be careful.

hope this helps

I would start with a saline solution, the kind that is used for rinsing contact lenses.

Good luck dude...

I did, went to the hospital got some type of antibiotic eye drops for a couple weeks. Eyes were swollen, blood shot red, irriated burning feeling for a long time. Even after I washed my eyes under the sink for a long time. I ALWAYS were eye protection, gloves and mask when I work with them. after 2 bad experiences, I won't take chances anymore.

i have the eye drops at work. your best bet is to go now to the ER to get checked out. please, dont wait until it gets worse.
trust me, go now. i was being a total man, but my wife made me go when my vision started to get blurry. you can go blind.

PLEASE!!!! go get it checked out.

I'd be more worried about TRUE PALYTHOAS which have the strongest palythoxin compared to zoanthids, palys (zoanthus gigantus ) etc.

+1

Still not a good idea to get tank water into your eyes or any cuts for that matter. Saltwater can contain dangerous bacteria such as a type of vibrio that will rot your flesh. My guess is that the poor little zoanthid gets blamed for much of what can be attributed to bacterial infections.

That sucks JR. I am kinda shocked that this is the first time this has happened to you with all the zoas and palys you keep.

From the sounds of the responses this seems like when you get stung by a bark scorpion and then go see the doc. All they can do is give you some anti's and send you on your way. Good luck.

Never got it in my eye, but I think I may have smoked some of it... :) lol. Long story short, was smoking a cigarette after having my hand in someone's tank (washed as well as I could mind you...) and immediately felt nauseated and pretty much vomited all day... I felt sick as a dog all day... Nothing else woulda caused it so I attributed it to something being on my hands... Probably got something on my cig filter...

You washed your hands so how is this a case of palytoxin poisoning?

I don't know if it was... like I said, there was nothing else that I could attribute it to, so I assumed it was that... I also said I "think" that's what happened... Just thought it was a coincidence with the timing... Possibly not washing my hands well enough? Not high enough? (Was passed elbow deep in the tank...) She didn't have soap on her counter so I didn't use any and just rinsed best I could... I don't know. All I know is in the middle of nowhere, I got sick. That's all I can tell ya.
