I was re-scaping one of my tanks and as I was moving my lobos my fingers started to burn like they were getting stung by a bee or something. So I just dropped the lobo and and checked out my hand. My fingers were kinda red but my lobos insides were on the outside. I've seen them like that before when one of my hammers fell too close to it but I never thought they would have stung that bad. Lesson learned I guess.

You should probably wear gloves whenever you go into your tank... You might not realize how much bacteria your hand have and not to mention all the horror stories about people getting flesh eating bacteria from their tanks... Makes you think twice before putting you hands into your tank with out them

I used to get knicks and cuts on my hands all the time, but one particular time I had a nice scrape on my knuckles and ran my hand inadvertantly through my frogspawn and WHAMMY! Burned like a blow torch.

It's a tremendous idea to wear gloves as moonlight pointed out. You never know what you might get exposed to or be allergic to. From a medical standpoint, when it comes to exposures to allergens (bee venom is a common example), it's the SECOND exposure that'll cause you some problems. In some cases, quite serious problems, namely, anaphylaxis. Not saying this to scare you, just trying to provide you with just cause for being cautious.

I was working in my tank a few weeks ago and brushed against my zoas. Didn't think anything opf it till about an hour later when my hand started to swell up and itch. Didn't last long but I'm much more careful now.. tho I still don;t wear gloves.

Yes. I have. not serious though in my case. Some folks develop increased sensitivity over time and a sting can be very severe with serious side efects. Wearing gloves is a good idea not only for the stings but to protect the animals in the tank from what's on your hands and to prevent a nasty bacterial or viral infection through any nicks you may have in your skin. The tank water has a plethora of compounds and microrganisms that can harm folks.

yup, my wife got stung by some froggy spawns, left little red dots up and down her forearm, dangerous hobby, becareful :)

I have had some slight irritation from what was probably my zoas when moving them.

those little hard tube things on LR punctured the soft skinned part of my thumb, was red and puffy for 3 days but went away.

Yeah I guess it is a good idea to wear glove then. The little swelling and redness that I had from it went away pretty quick. I've always got my hands in my tank and never really gave much thought about all the diferent types of bacteria that are in there so I think from now on i'll be using gloves.

very interesting posts!!!!
Never thought that all them corals and more could get us i knew they could get each other.. Wow.... i have never been a glove wearer but now i think i will just to be safe!

I was just bit by my wild marshal island black and gold damsel. I was wondering why it was circling my hand like a shark as I put down a coral frag. My wife did slide into fire coral while snorkeling in st kitts. She still has a little scar on her knee from it.
