I have got some beautiful bluejays,Cardinals,Hairy woodpeckers daily at my feeders they are just awesome to watch! I work from home all day on the phone so this de- stresses me just to watch them while I'm working :)

Someone tell me why the males are better looking than the females? lol (No smart remarks! lol
I don't feed anything special other than black oil sunflower seeds and suets and peonuts for the jays but it seems to draw in more cardinals than I have ever seen switching from regular seed to the black oil.

Anyone like birdwatching? what do you feed? what birds does it attract?
I think my favorite though would be the woodpeckers :)

whoa. just hit a favorite subject with me! Males have the brighter colors for two reasons, one, to attract a mate and two for protection...not of themselves, but of the female. The female has muted colors so that she can not be easily seen while nesting. The male, vibrant colors and much higher pitched screech is there to protect her.

I have jays, cardinals and a red headed woodpecker in my backyard. Also wrens, and tufted titmouse...sooooooooooooo cute. Have you ever been out to Northhampton park? You can walk through the trail back there and hold out your hand with the seed and they will come and sit right on your hand. It's a completely amazing experience.

Good to know Im not the only one lol
Thanks for the clarification on the males :) yeah the female cardinals are nice too but they are much lighter than the males.Tufted titmouse? Are they kind of grey with light brown bellies? I have those too dont know if they are the titmouse?
Never been to that park but it sounds great!
I cant wait until summer until I can see the Cedar waxwings again "Ever seen these birds"? (they are my 2nd favorite summer bird) and so beautiful!
The ultimate fav for me is the hummingbirds :)

LOVE the waxwings! We have morning doves that nest in our arbor...and lots of hummingbirds...i have an english garden in both the back and front yard and they love, love, love the lillys and the trumpet vine.

titmice are very tiny. they have a little tuft (i.e. the name...lol) that pokes up on their head...they have light tan bellies..big black eyes.

the other ones that i totally love, especially at Northhampton are the Chickadees. They are the ones that will sit on your hand.

hahaha. My triton cockatoo? Will actually wing the food at me if he's in a bad mood. Most of the time I plop the food in and run yelling, "incoming!!!!"

Would love to feed the birds all year long but need to figure out a way to keep the 7 Eleven rat away in the process... open to suggestions.

I don't have to drive all the way to Mendon Ponds Park?

nope. Northampton. They are actually a little "famous" for the winter walk with the chickadees. Make sure you load up your pockets with black oil sunflower seeds. Gary, it's the most wonderful experience...because you need to stand perfectly still and be so quiet...and they will just come and land on your hand filled with seed....sometimes 2-3 at a time. I am WAY overdue for one of those little hikes out there. Glad Shawna brought this topic up!:D

dang Chickadees at Mendon must be copycats!

I have an all-weather birdbath (koi pond) and I feed a host of sparrows all winter, not much else, the rowdy little beggars. But I live 2 mi from city center, so sparrows are what we mostly have. They spend their time in the roof-high quince bush outside my window, or on watch in the very tall hemlocks, and I feed them through the winter. People curse sparrows as little bandits, but if they're what you have, you can still love their cheerful alerts when the feeder's just been filled (you only THINK they don't watch you!) and their antics while bathing.

Sparrows are nice,Kind of like what starlings are like here where I live ( are they the same)? Anyhow the farmers poison them (really sad)It's nice that you're helping them get through the winter though  Oh and I know they watch us lol

i've enjoyed the turkeys alot this winter. my poor bird dog wants a piece of them ,and the owl that hangs out in backyard .
