i went with cheapo ones from ebay, hopefully will work ok. got 2 for 8 bucks and shipping was free. Sorry rick would have split shipping with you if I would have seen your post before I bought! I am planning on hardwireing them into a extension cord with no realay anyway so it would be a shame to smoke a good one!

yup, thats why I am not using one, melvs reef used to use a no relay for several years and had no issues, the ones i got were rated to 50W, my pump is just a small powerhead so the only way i think i can smoke it is with a power surge or something abnormal, we will see!

a couple years ago I hardwired a couple float switches into an extension cord for an ato using an aqualifter pump. It worked great for 5-6 months, but one day I stuck my hand in the sump and got a terrible shock. Apparently the float switches leak eventually and salt water makes an excellent conductor. I wouldn't risk killing myself If I were you. I bought a cheap dpdt relay off ebay. $3 with free shipping. It took 5 minutes to wire using an old cell phone charger i had laying arround as the low voltage power source. It has worked great for years. Ill be glad to help walk you through the parts and wiring if you would like.

yep, 120v versus low current 12v flowing through the water if you have a switch failure is a bad thing. I would NEVER run a switch directly like that, they are designed for 12v, and wiring up a relay is not very hard at all.

I agree. even 12 volt will provide a little bite. those little nano pumps that were the craze a few years back leaked some electricity on me...
Lol...Aquahub has a great kit, dpdt relay inclided for somewhere around 30-40 bucks. Thats with dual switches (l,ow voltage), mold a holder, smail guard...I use one and it has worked VERY well. When I costed out the parts to make another, I found that aquahub was right in line and truly a DIY kit at a DIY price. When it comes to seitces, cheaper is NOT better..mopst cheapies will have theri seal;ant dissolve in salt water.

Yep, the awuahub is probably the best bang for the buck, all together, and in one spot. I've not had any problems with mine.

Me too, float valves are the best for auto topoff, but now I am using a Kalk reactor and the added benefit of being able to control a solenoid to shut off the water feed to the reactor if the PH rises is a great backup feature. I can still use a float valve as the backup to the float switch if the kalkreactor solenoid is turned off.
