if you could tell me one store or one warehouse that don't have DEAD FISH on any giving day i would stop buying from them forever.

sharkie,

you're right, all stores have dead fish, but not to the extent of the mortality rate of fish in this store..i agree that fish die (transit, stress, etc) but how can one account for leaving the fish in the bags for days?! When I was there, I saw a small bag with 4 banana wrasses in there! not 1 or 2, but 4 fish sharing the little amt of water and it has been there for about 2 days...the question is no longer about how many dead fish but how the owners are treating the animals...of course, not everybody care about these things. If interested you can go check it out for yourself...also, the staff there including the owner (especially), dont know jack about saltwater...ask him what the salinity of the tank water or how does a red sea sailifin differ from the regular one, he'll go like HUH???

vtrider, the clams they have are the ordinary croceas that you can get elsewhere for around $40, they're definitely not worth 60. anyhow, nuff said.

I didn't see any dead fish, which is why I purchased from them. After all the horror stories that I heard from everyone posting in this thread, I thought I'd have a gander myself, and it didn't seem much worse than some of the "lower-end" fish stores around. Maybe I caught them right after a shipment?

The croceas aren't worth 60, I agree, but that's pretty close to what most LFS around these parts charge for a run of the mill 4" crocea (I've seen 80 before).

You caught them at a good time :D ..
Several times I went there they had 5-6 bags with all dead fish in their tanks. Yeah they were still in the bag.

I know a guy who got a super nice crocea for $20 and it's doing great in his tank. That clam somewhere else would be at least $60 or more. You just have to be REALLY careful what to buy there.

NO lfs want to see any dead Fishes.Dead fishes mean dead money.give the guy a chance, how about tell him about Reef central.we're all kill livestocks during our brief reefing experience.i'm pretty sure the guy is frustrated why his livestocks is dead.he's will learn fast or he's wouldn't in businese for long.

Sorry to see that BUT they are not the one that put those 4 wrasses in one bag. usally the wholesaler or shipper of those fish bags them in one bag. also just wandering how do you know that it's been in the bag for about 2 days, i guess you drop by their shop everyday.

DEAD FISH=NO MONEY, do you think the owner of any fish store would like that.

Even if the fish died in transit to this fishstore... why would you float them in the tank? Furthermore... why would you leave 5 or 6 of them out for all the customers to see? Doesn't seem like a good idea either way.

I know a person on RC that has killed half the fishes that has arrived into the bay area. Don't get me wrong, he know alot about the hobby and loves his fish, but the guy just has too much money and a fish dying here and there doesn't matter to much.

Don't want to hijack this post, but while I have the attention of a lot of the BAR crew I would like to introduce myself, since I have tried to sign up on BAR to post but no one ever activates me :(, anyways I'm looking for Picasso or Onyx Clowns in the Bay Area and was hoping someone had a lead? Pet store, individuals, members? I plan on attending the swap next weekend, hopefully get to meet you and get finally get me registered on BAR!

Thanks,

Josh

My take on the store;

- They will soon notice that dead fish are a loss
- They will notice that sales is better than losses
- They will hire someone to help keep their fish alive
- The prices will rise to reflect the extra employee
- More fish will be alive

Well, that would be what I think happens.

As for pricey stores, hopefully the price is a reflection of the higher cost of maintaining healthy fish (more clean water, more tank cleaning, better food?) rather than a money grab. Though I'm sure there is plenty of money grabbing too.

Still, if I pay $2 for a turbo snail and balk at a $3 turbo snail, I have to remember that for ME to go get a turbo snail personally, would cost many hundreds of dollars as I travel to Mexico, find a snail, then travel back with it!

Besides, if we are WILLING to pay $60 for a clam, then someone will gladly sell it to us!

Sharkie, quick question, have you been there before? if not maybe you should take a look, maybe you're okay with everything you see there and that's cool...

true they didn't put the fishes in the bag but as the owner, the responsibility is on you (not you per se) to make sure the animals are suffering as little stress as possible once they are in your hands. If you bought some fish and the store have all in one bag, would you let it float around in your tank for 2 days? i think you know the answer to that, so the same applies to ANY LFS. Nobody likes dead stuff, especially the owner (as you've pointed out), but it does not justify the fact that fish are dying in bags and these guys are chatting on the side. I've only been there only twice for the "Super sale" over the past weekends and observed all that.
Also, to tell you the truth (IMHO), the only reason why the bags are still floating, is because their system is not even ready to host that many fish, that's why. I remember when i was there the first time, they were still building the system and the tanks were empty, and the next weekend, they have huge inventory on fish, floating them in bags, hoping the customers will just grab by the bags and the tank water looks bad (milky)...tell me if you don't see anything wrong in this picture. Anyhow, too many things seem wrong with the store, especially the way they treat the animals...but you can always be their faithful customer if you choose to. happy reefing.

I'm not willing to pay $60 for a clam, thats why the only clam in my tank is a $20 one. If something is a good deal I'll buy it.I've never actually been to lucky goldfish yet,my friend picked up the clam for me. He did tell that the place sucked though. Every once in a while he drops by there off their craigslist ad.

they are selling food for birds now...looks like they will carry birds very soon... LOL, I think it's gonna smell really bad in summer.

You'd think that if their tanks are still being set up and not ready to hold fish yet....then they shouldn't be accepting fish to sell....?

You'd think that they'd want to be able to hold their own before opening shop...
just my 2cents

with all the commotion this thread has sparked, i'm going to stop by the store this weekend to see how they're doing....although, i'm not going with the intention of buying anything..heh

The stores that care enough will tell their supplier to exercise better livestock handling practices or the business will be taken elsewhere. Seen it happen, and it makes a difference.

went to lucky..not bad

went to lucky..not bad

so i went to the lucky goldfish store in san jose and it turned out to be not so bad as i thought. I got a healthy looking blue tang for $25. aquatic gallery were selling the same size blue tangs for $50. I aslo got 2 cleaner shrimps for $10 each. The fish look healhty when i went to see them. So it wasn't as bad as i thought. It's been a week and the tang is doing good and so are the shrimps.

Moreoever, their prices are awesome. Their tanks are pretty nice and cheap too. They sell glass tanks with rounded corners.

I was there today too. All there BT has ick and I saw one dead BT in the same tank too. Make sure u QT your tang and do a hyposalinity gradually though as not to shock the fish. Don't mix it with your other fishes rightaway cause they'll catch that ick too.

A guy there sold an orange zoanthid to a buyer and he said it was a very hardy coral. When I look at the bag it was not a zoa. It was a sun coral -- not easy to take care.
