Anyone here give up on keeping SPS?

Everyday.:D

Lol! But if I remember correctly, I have seen pics of your setup and you seem to get great coloration and growth!

SunnyX had a great point IMO about maturity + age.

I know personally my Acropora never really performed until the tank got around 1 year old ... and despite changes + re-aquascapes - at about 2 it rounded a corner where it's easier to get good results IMO.

I find a fair # of my corals just really don't `perform' for 3-6 months ... and some take 6-12 to really color + take off. JB NY had a good thread a few months ago about this - corals that for him we brown sticks for 1 year + ... and now are total gems.

Often it takes a while for corals to acclimate fully - to really be tuned to the tank IMO.
Some take off on day one - some seem to take forever.

How long have you had these corals?
How much have they grown?

Yeah well the tank is over a year old now. Most of the frags I have had, have been in the tank for 5 months.

Still what about the photo period, and height of the halide? What should I try next? Right now it is at 16" and 4hours on.

Thanks.

It's not that. It's knowing that in a blink of an eye these wonderful colored $tick$ can be a bucket full of bleached white curios. Makes me really appreciate my zoanthid tank.:p

Yeah Zoos are amazing. Almost as brightly colored as the sps. Lets not forget the Rics, although I had a bright orange one once that bleached :/

Yeah your talking me into it man! lol! ;)

It doesn't have to be one or the other. Set up a bunch of tanks.;)

I think the general consensus is that corals need about 8-12 hours. I do 12 hour actinics, 10 hour MH with the actinics coming on 1 hour before the MH and going off 1 hour after.

Personally, I think you have WAY too much light, but, IMO, that's the case with most reefers--we tend to think bigger is always better. I like Anthony Calfo's suggestion for MHs, as it goes against the common stereotype that experts only want your money and are trying to sell you bigger and better stuff. He says that it's a mistake to think of watts per gallon or anything like this, but that you can make some generalizations. He says less than 18" tank depth, 150w is best. 18-24" should use 175w. 24-36" should use 250w. Taller than 36" (for all 5 of us who have tanks that big) should use 400w.

Very nice.

Yeah I do have a 12 gallon nano-tank, but it is more the gf's tank then mine.

Niiiiiiice yumas!:)

Is that a clam in there screaming "Help me, I'm being stung by a ricordia florida!?":D

I was going to say dave!!!

Your SPS tank was hands down the nicest aquarium I have ever laid eyes on. When is the new one coming?

Ditch the Sand.
Cook your rocks.

Im just kidding!

On the subject of SPS's and lighting... I was reading a few threads where people cut back their MH period to 6 hours a day and the actinics to 10 hours. They claim they saw a much more consistant growth rate.

some times you just have to wait some of my sps took close to a year for there color to come back especialy if there where shipped

Interesting... where did you see this? Do you know if they were corals that demand high light?

I read it here and I am assuming they need high light... I believe it was in the SPS forum, actually.

Also how high do you think I should raise the light?

Thanks for your input guys.

Some do run their lights at 8-9 inches off the water. But their are plenty of others running them at 12" or higher. (16 for me)

So: 12 inches off the water over a 24" deep tank would be 36" between light and bottom of tank.

Your tank is only 12" deep so that would translate to raising the light to 24" above the surface of the water. Seems like a lot, but it's worth a shot anyway. Then try increasing the photoperiod slowly.

Of course, if raising them that much helps, then it probably makes sense to downgrade your lights a bit.

Good luck,

Dan

Thanks for the comp.

With the other projects going on it is not a top priority right now but I will get to it.

what other projects are you working on? I can't imagine anything that I would be more concerned about than getting that beautiful tank back together!!!

I just wish I could get my sump put together. Christmas hit the old wallet hard this year. Better there than on a credit card though. :)

Don't forget that I am still interested in another flame wrasse in the near future!! You will have to let me know ahead of time so I can set back some cash.

gman,

Thanks for those links!

(Pssst I am one of the maggots! Muwahaha!)

So basically you can try to run your halide for 4-6 hours because Some people feel that on a reef there is limited exposure to 'strong' light so they reduce their photoperiod to 3-4 hrs to simulate 12am-4pm on the reef.

However you really cannot do this unless you have supplimentation? How much supplimentation are we looking at? What amount of pcs, vhos, t5s would one need for the rest of the approximate the year round 12 hour photoperiod in the equator.

Thanks.
