I recently purchased a hawaiian brown octopus at a pet store. I have been looking for one for quite some time. I have a 55 gallon tank set up in my quiet bedroom just for an octo. The one I got is really small so I have him in a critter cage in the 55 so I dont lose him. So far he has been a good eater, however still hides out in the rock. I know it hasnt been long enough for him to come out but as far as I can tell he is in good health and look forward to seeing more of him. I just wanted to see if anyone out there has had any experience with these species since all i have read on these forums are mostly common species. Any help would be much appreciated. THANKS

The octopus you are referring to could be O. Cyanea. In which case, it will outgrow its current tank and will need at least 120 gallons when it is an adult, likely more. If you have pictures we will be able to help you positively ID it. If it is O. Cyanea it will be diurnal.

I dont have any pics yet I am still waiting for him to come out of the his hiding place in the rock...so when that happens I will post some pics

HE is still hidin out but i know hes ok since he found another home in a different rock i put in the critter cage from my tank give him more hidous so any day now hopefully ill get a pic soon

There are half a dozen "brown" Hawaiian octopuses. Only O. cyanea and another long-armed species will grow too large for a 55, but having kept them, I can say that they will in under a year.

well i took him out of the tank while he was in the rock to try to get a good look at him and he squirted me right in the face with water....

Yup :)

You should try to let it settle in for a while before messing with it too much. Might make it resent you and hide from you all the time.

Each octopus is different. Just offer pieces of food on the end of a stick when you can and it will eventually associate you with food. You can try raw shrimp, scallops, crabs, krill. Finding out what your octopus really likes to eat will help.

NEWSFLASH!!! Ok so I recently was cleaning my tank that the octo is in and since I still havent seen the octo for a while I was just making sure he was alright and in doin this I discovered another invert that must have hitchhiked in. I found what i believe to be a baby squid, however in getting a closer look I think it might be a baby octo. It has a conical shaped head thats where I am confused and I counted seven legs on it. I was real suprised to find this little guy and am curious to see ho it does. I have seen it in the tank ever since I found it so I dont know and I am sure its not offspring cause my other octo is still alive. Anyone got any ideas???

Mother octos can sometimes live for several weeks after their eggs hatch. Are you positive it isn't a baby you found?

Any idea what kind of octopus you bought?

If your rock came from Florida you might have gotten a hitchhiking O. mercatoris.

At some point 2 octopuses in the same tank will fight.

I honestly couldnt tell you if it is the offspring or not. the store I bought it from told me it was a hawaiian brown that I bought. Also the octo I bought is still really small as well so it doesnt make since to me that it would be mature enough to lay eggs

We need to figure out what species of octopus you bought, it's perplexing me. Check out some pictures of the "Hawaiian Night Octopus" Octopus ornatus (grows pretty big but it's Hawaiian, and it's brown) "Hawaiian Short Arm Sand Octopus" and any other hawaiian octos you can find.

ill do some research and see what i can come up with I would take a picture but I havent been able to get it out of the rock it hides in. I have looked at the O. Cyanea and its possoble that it could be one but im not 100 percent sure. Its reddish in color but thats the only thing I can say would be similar.

I managed to coax the octo out of his rock, ( I hope its allright)... I honestly couldnt tell you what it really looked like specifically...I took some pictures, but they didnt turn out real well (blurry)...so ill have to try to get some more soon. I hope my octo doesnt hate me for coaxing it out of the rock but it actually seemed curious more than scared for the first time....hope to get some more good news soon and pics!!!

Cool cool. Yeah they can be pretty stubborn sometimes. You have to make it think it was IT'S idea to come out of hiding.

Good luck.
