Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

Guy, this seems to be the place where most of the MH people are.

I'm looking for insight on which direction to go w/ my new light fixture for my new 72x28x28 tank.

1. 5 Ft Cebu Sun with 3 x 250 Watt Hamilton 14,000K & 4-80W T5 460nm blue bulbs w/ 3 x 250W magnetic ballasts

2. 5 Ft Cebu Sun with 3 x 250 Watt Hamilton 14,000K & 4-80W T5 460nm blue bulbs with the three dimmable MH 250W electronic ballasts

3. 5 Ft Cebu Sun with the 3 x 250 Watt Radium bulbs and M80 ballasts

What do you guys think?

Thanks.

I'm new to mh myself, so take my 2 cents fwiw, but I think you get way more out of MH with high quality reflectors. Those cebu sun's are nice all in one setups but the reflectors stink.

Get some high end reflectors like lumen brights or lumenax and your corals will thank you....

I just setup 3 250w pendants running lumen bright minis and electronic ballasts with radiums and so far I'm seeing better results than with previous leds...

Interesting. Ive read a couple of very nice tanks that either use hamilton fixtures (d2mini comes to mind) or suggest them (JP).

Ill look at the ones you mentioned as well.

David you just said you were new to mh so how can you say that the cebu sun reflectors stink? There are several people that have posted on this thread that own them and have amazing tanks!

10yrs of MH, switched to LED's last December. I have never been happier! Tank looks better than ever and my electric bill is a whole lot less expensive. I was able to sell my chiller and the fish rooms A/C runs a lot less. Full disclosure though - I do not have a lot of SPS maybe 2 or 3 colonies. I have zoa's, LPS and miscelleanus softies. I will say between the electric bill savings and the no bulb replacements by next June they paid for themselves.

Right, I was trying to point out that I'm new, but I've also researched quiet a bit.

I shouldn't have said they "stink" but simply that you can do better.

Here's a good read:

Hope that helps.

The cebu sun's are actually a very good bang for the buck setup imo. Especially if you want to run mh and T5's.

No doubt, if you don't keep many sps your wasting money on mh and way better off with leds!

The Cebu Sun is a great fixture.
I also have separate Cabo Sun reflectors with retro LET T5 kit and would have a hard time deciding between the two for my tank.
I would say it depends on what kind of spread or penetration you need... i.e. dimensions of your tank, and aesthetics.
But if the cebu dimensions work for you, and you like the idea of an all in one fixture, you can't go wrong and your coral won't know the difference.

+1 there are many reflectors that may be better. However, I go off how my corals are doing plus I like the idea that there is an active cooling system allowing my t5 bulbs to run at a more optimal temperature, improving both bulb output and bulb life.

Magnetic vs electronic?

Bulb recommendations?
Good luck lol!

I would only run magnetic if you absolutely need the extra par it will give you. Electronic ballasts are more energy efficient and have additional features if you need them (dimming, wattage selectable on the fly).

I like my 20k radium bulbs myself but everyone has different tastes and if your running additional T5's with the mh you can always tweak your color byway of t5 bulb options.

If you go with 250w Radiums, the Hamilton M80 magnetic ballasts it the only ballast that correctly drives the bulbs. An electronic ballast will under drive them and you will end up with a different spectrum (more blue) and shorter bulb life.

Radium 250, Geisemann Actinic in front, Geisemann Pure Actinic at the back. I run my radium on a lumatek eballast, it runs crisp white with a nice hint of blue.

3 x 250 Radium Lamps in Lumen Bright Mini Pendants on Electronic Ballast will be fine. Radiums on average last me 16 months, I have had one last 24 months and one that only lasted 12 months. I change them at a 10% loss in PAR and Foot Candles. I did receive two Radiums that where not up to there own standard and put out less that a 15 month old lamp, so I switched to two to Phoenix SE and so far they are holding up. We shall see how long they last, and unless you really stare hard you cannot tell which two are Phoenix and which one is the old Radium.

Finally got around to throwing up my led vs halide setup.

So my wonderful fiancee allowed me to setup a 4x2x1 frag tank in the lounge room ! shes a legend, its a trade as she has two guinea pigs in the lounge. anyway on with the setup.

My aim is to run frags under different lighting and review the results after a year, depending if one type takes a turn for the worse or shows no promise. Corals are mirrored so they can be compared.

Im running a 150w 14k SMG halide from guppies (in shop fitter fitting with UV glass added) vs a 120w full spectrum ebay led, the 120w is pulling about 50w from the wall, its sitting too close to the corals to run at full power. I have also pulled off the lenses from the ebay unit, After running leds for 5 years or so, I'm convinced wide angle and lots of coverage is best, no spotlighting and nice mix of color.

The tank shares my sump with my main tank, I have the flow in the tank setup fairly equal as this could impact on results.

Running undetectable No3 and No4, on salifert kits anyway, need to get myself a hanna. Vinegar dosing keeps these at zero and i run a fairly small skimmer- alk at 7 to 8, some say this is the best when dosing vingar, calc is around 420, mag 1350. Temp around 24.5 to 26. on max swing. I dose amino as my readings are so low.

As you can see the LED unit is sitting right on the glass, as i have no lenses i get no spotlighting with this unit. The halide is about 10" off the water. Frags disks are upside down, long story no frag rack, ill glue some on the bottom when they get bigger and rack them up.

This is the halide side, some frags have come from my main tank (halide - T5) and some from under my led tank. few brown corals from bargain bin at local LFS.

and the LED side - this setup has been up for a few weeks, the LED side is looking much nicer at this stage, and not just because its under 20k lighting, if i move the coral under halide you can see its far more colourful from being under led, so the led is really driving pigmentation on certain corals.

As you can see im going all in cheap here, SMG globes are not the bottom of the barrel but not far off, tempted to throw a 10k Ushio in. But as Im also pitching this against a cheap ebay unit it kinda makes some sense.

So Ive had some of these corals under the LED for a few months, and I have to say im pretty impressed with this ebay unit, i was so skeptical to start with, but my bargain basement acro I picked up has turned electric blue from a terrible brown, I also fragged a bit off and threw it in my main tank, it actually just stayed brown with tiny blue tips, but it grew twice as fast. Just give you an idea, i have a shot of of the coral under natural sunlight which actually shows up pink, it just looks incredible under natural sunlight, i was moving a small frag tank around and the afternoon sun caught it, was worth taking a shot. shows how far off our 14 lighting is at producing true colour, well 6500k colour.

hope you enjoy the ride, Im going to do a range of close shots of each coral an see how we go.

a quick shot of my main tank, 3x2x2 running for a few years, recently under T5 and halide, DIY led before that. Yep i know tang is now asking for bigger tank, dont worry buddy i hear ya!

Thanks Jestronix!!!
I've wanted to set something up like this myself. People always talk so highly of MH but I don't remember them being that awesome.. lol
I specifically waited to get into LEDS until certain spectrum properties came into light(haha) but it really wasn't until last year I felt comfortable doing so.

In that picture, it's pretty amazing how washed out the MH looks. (and people say it's the MH that brings out colors... I always thought it was just the actinics)

My LEDs and MH ran with almost identical spectrums (to my eye). I like a crisp white look, not the blue windex look. Under this type of lighting, which was fairly consistent, I had various SPS that colored up very well under MH and were either brown, or turned green under LED. Both were long term results.
One problem with the above setup, is that it appears he is using two completely different spectrums which will alter both growth and color.

I have the blues dialled down to about 25% on the LEDs, if I drop the blue LEDs lower to get to 14k there's too much green and red. It's not a custom unit so getting 14k out of its going to be tricky. The iphone pics elevate the blue look on the LEDs too. Id say its 18k by eye, I've noticed far more algae on the glass from this led unit too, too many warm LEDs then being balanced with lots of blue LEDs. It's why these units are cheap.

Hands down on my main tank 180w of T5 and 300w of halide 20k looks awesome, I hate over blue tanks but with an ati purple mixed in the cri is right up there, but dam I'm hoping led comes out on top for this test, here in Australia power is 30c a kW , set to go up another 60% in next 5 years. As we hit summer here I'm running my tanks at night, 5pm to 4am, less chiller time, less ac time plus I still get too see my tank all night. I usually go to bed at 1am. It gets hot here in summer, 45c last year on a couple days, that's 113f !!! Average in summer is high 90s so again massive power use for chilling.

Really I need a par meter to match the output of each I guess.

Open to all suggestions on this budget test, just need someone to do the highend radium vs lani led setup!!

Running pure NSW for this test too, no more mixing!
