Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

Local LFS keeps telling me I won't be able to buy MH parts or bulbs soon, so go ahead and get LED.

That's OK - I got a sack full o' bulbs that'll last me a couple years that I bought on sale...

But I think MH's death call is a little premature.

Lol, we are a ways out from that. Halides are used for plant growth etc still on a large scale. Great lights with great results are hard to replace/replicate.

As much as I love supporting my LFS, on stuff like that I just buy online anyway. The markup at the brick and mortar store ends up bumping the price higher than the online store price plus shipping. Plus when i buy it online I get the exact item I want, not the one the LFS decided to stock. Livestock I exclusively buy from LFS though...

I really LIKE the idea of supporting LFS, but when he keeps telling me "you can get x online..." doesn't sound like he really wants to help out much. I mean, I get his attitude about not buying what you have on the shelf and all. But I'm about to get to where I'll just buy online due to this. Not what I'd prefer, really.

There's another store that has used stuff around. I found a few spare parts I needed - the part I needed was small - I bought a boxfull of T5 stuff (2 ballasts and enough ends for 10 lights) for $50. Then I put more stuff I needed since I was already in the store that I might have ordered online.

Anyway.....I'm rather excited to be buying folks' discarded seconds for my new tank. :D I've "saved" probably $1,000 over just ordering stuff new. Back to the regular program.

So everyone knows - this thread and others like it is why I went back to the future with MH. It's pretty cheap, too! :D Don't care about electricity right now - I'm at $.10/Kwatt.

Just saw some photos on Sanjay's Facebook page (maybe private to public) of how his corals have changed over the past year and I must say that am extremely impressed.

There are 20+ SPS corals there, tons of high end stuff such as Echinata, milkshakes, planets, you name it; the whole rainbow of colors - reds, blues, purples, greens. Not only there's significant and impressive growth - going from 2'' frag to a 6'' and more, but the colors should please many of SPS snobs out there. This is not your typical LED tank, this is as good as I've seen in a while.

I've been following this thread since it started and I must say that I was skeptical of LED success for high end acros, what I've seen today has changed my opinion.

I'm not sure how we can get to see some of those photos, I'm definitely not going to post any links / embed photos without proper permissions from RC and Sanjay.

He is using 3 Radion Pro panels per 2x2 area at the time of MACNA - he would not touch on color during his preso and was less than enthused privately. $2,000 per 2x2 area to do what he did... who else is doing this?

This addresses the spread (mind you that he is using wide angle lenses as well). But there were quite a few users who've argued in this thread that it is not possible to have good colors via LED because of the spectrum.

There was nothing in his preso or personal conversations to indicate that any of these people are wrong. In fact, even though he was somewhat cryptic about it, his refusal to address any color in the preso is quite telling that the might be right. He was very cautious not to throw out any negatives, but you could easily tell where "no comments" equaled negatives.

Don't waste your time. You will just get drawn into a discussion with the people in this thread that for some odd reason have incredibly strong feelings about lamps.

Once you have proven one thing the goal post will just keep moving....

The power of Radiums:

Just thought I'd put a picture in this thread so we can all take a look at the growth and color over time under Radiums. It's the venerable Oregon Tort. I lost my original colony and am starting new with a frag from Reeflover62. So far so good. Hopefully it continues to do well!

It's not a waste of time at all.
This thread is full of great lighting conversation from all sides and it's worth discussing in my opinion.

As to dtum's observations, i've been saying this whole time that spread is a huge problem with LEDs and that we need TWICE the units per given amount of space that the manufacturers tell us. Sanjay's setup and results seem to coincide with this. But like mentioned above, who wants to spend that much money upfront?! One of the biggest reasons for using LED is the supposed cost savings. If you have to use that many fixtures, it's just not worth it. Even if it were to give you the same growth and color as a good MH setup.

Fair enough, it is just that everyone has been asking for photos and here are some finally that are TOTM worthy. Thought it would only be fair to mention :)

There's a home for us old MH rejects!!! I've been reading through this thread all day. Good info in here. 400w radium user (with t5 and blue led strips). I argue that my 32x32 cube is more efficient running my Giesmann Spectra than several LED fixtures to get the same spread. Even then, I still wouldn't run t5 or halide without t5's because I feel that tubes eliminate shadowing, and give better growth when used in conjunction.

Just to join in the fun with Joe

Thats is a spectacular coral!(They all are actually, very very nice!)

Thanks Joe :)

Thank you.

Wow!!!! I was just about to post a few of my pics but there's no way I can now after seeing those!!!

That's only from the top down angle. They'r ugly from the front :lol:

It's a 115g cube being lit with a Giesemann Spectra 400w radium + 4x t5's + 2 blue LED reefbrites. If I didn't need the coverage from the t5's, I would only run the radium + blue reefbrites. The spectrum of the 2 together is jaw dropping.

A pic from last month

I'm not bashing led's but with halide proven technology and it being readily available and relatively speaking, affordable I'll stick with it. I have LEDs over one of my smaller tanks and although it does the job my main display will continue with halides and vho's. I have no heat issues with my setup with the halides and IMO could not be replicated with LEDs at this time. Perhaps in time my opinion will change but if nothing else the initial cost of LEDs could easily pay for bulbs and electrical usage for good number of years.

Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

Here's my contribution to the thread. I did add a forth mh to my tank about 10 days ago and have seen a tremendous difference in my all of my corals.

Really?

Then allow me to try to change your mind back :D

Here is what Krzysztof(Lunar) said about his experience with LEDs which is the exact same experience I have had and the whole point of this thread . . .

I like all ATI lamps a lot. ATI hybrid fixture seemed like a good idea for me . . . .

However, I noticed after some months that not all my corals like leds light. The more delicate acroporas started to loose their vibrant colour.

Yes, everyone on this thread knows LEDs can and do grow some nice corals just not as many or as simply or as cheaply as a plain old Radium metal halide bulb.
