Anyone up for another 135 Thread?

It's a nice desk, but it probably won't hold without some help. How would I go about reinforcing that? I've got a ton of 2x4's in the garage.

Is it oak or oak-colored-paper over MDF? It's hard to tell...

My personal opinion is that I would NEVER put a tank of any size over a computer/monitor. But, hey - that's the evil sys admin in me talking....

It's easier to build something from scratch then try to reinforce an older piece. All kinds of variables.... Was it assembled with glue, screws, nails? (Screws and waterproof glue would be the best.) Was it properly clamped when it was assembled, etc.

I wouldn't chance it. But, I'm looking at it from the view of someone that has a family, a mortgage, and buys my furniture. ;)

I'm having a hard time deciding how I feel about you wanting to replace your current aquarium. To me it seems like a big waste of money, and being a teenager myself, I know something about wasting money ;) I have had a 29-gallon for 4 years now. I have wanted to upgrade the aquarium, change things, etc. Then I decided to just sit down improve upon what I had. I upgraded the lighting (from 36W to 2x65W) upgraded the skimmer (seaclone to remora) added more liverock, and all of a sudden it became much more appealing to me. That was roughly 2 years ago. Now I find that I am going to have to downgrade my system in order to be able to have it in a dorm room (senior in highschool, so starting to get a 20-gallon JUST for college now). I'm not you, I don't know exactly how you feel, and I am not going to pretend that I do. At one point I had upgraded to a 60-gallon, and found that I could not afford it, so downgraded back to the 29-gallon. I wasted roughly $300 dollars. You do what you want, but I know from experience that in the end you will have 2 things to consider:
Was it ok to waste money on a new system?
Do I regret loosing the 135 gallon?

I'm taking the top shelf thing off, and the computer is going too. Yes, it is oak.

How did you waste money? I'm not wasting money here...even if I spend a little extra, it would make the system better.
Losing the 135 is a loose phrase. Technically, yes, I'm loosing it. But I'm keeping everything inside. The only things not coming along are the tang and the look of a large tank. IMO, a set of really nice nanos are more appealing to the eye than a large tank.

Ahhh. Okay. Looks like 3/4" oak for the desktop. If the "cabinets" on each side of the desktop are made from 3/4" oak and extend from bottom of the desktop to the floor in a single piece and have good solid corners, then it's probably do-able. The center area where the drawer resides will be the weakest point.... If you could remove the drawer and use a couple of oak 1x3's on edge to span between the 2 cabinets - screwed & glued - it should be quite stable. You can use the face of the drawer as a facade to make it all "pretty" again.

That's assuming it's level. ;)

Yeah, the 10g, if any, would go in the center. I will end up removing the drawer I think, and screw and glue it on using those L shaped things. I can ask my Dad for help here, if he feels like helping the project. It looks as though they are single pieces to the floor, I will check when I am back home, I'm at my Dad's now. I'll check the level too, that would be a "female dog" if it wasn't.

Let's play a game. Guess how big the following tank is:

No cheating, please.

keep the 135!! You now have a taste and I don't think you will be able to handle having such a small system and not being able to put what you want in it. It looks to me that you are trying to make things easier for yourself thinking that with a nano you will have fantastic equipment and wonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have to upgrade things later or have to wait to buy better equipment in the future to upgrade (patience). Keep in mind that keeping a nano system is 100 times harder than keeping a larger system and could be VERY VERY frustrating even with the best equipment money can buy!! If you didn't have patience with the 135, with a nano I have a feeling you will be giving up reef keeping all in all.

It's not that I have a problem with waiting, it's money. I'm 15, so saving money for Tunze and a halide is hard, since I have cars and girlies to think about :p

Why would it be harder? It is similar water volume, just smaller display.

Care to traaaade? :D

Trust me, you guys will all go "Wow, Tyler was right! These nanos are way cooler/better/amazing!"

i give him 2 months with the nano's and he'll be out of reefing for good. hahahaha smaller is harder you know conditions in small tanks can turn quick and fast your gonna have to test everyday all your parameters. the one time you skip a day could me total disaster.all i can say is good luck if your frustuarated now hahaha wait and see.then we can start a thread " see what happens when you have no patience"or "what not to do" just jokin tyler

falseperc
i don't think it is that hard to tell seeing you got the description of your tanks at the bottom of your signature.

He said no cheating...

I was going to guess 10g without seeing his sig. The gorg and snail give it away.
