the eheim 1250 is only rated for 317 gph and the mag is 700. i'm not getting anywhere with the mag 7, so i'm going to upgrade. which would be better the eheim 1262 @ 900 gph or the mag 9.5 @ 950 gph?
Definitly the Eheim 1262. It is truly the stronger pump on this skimmer,

Charles if you can run the mak4 the mag18 will heat the tank up alot. I noticed it when I left my mag18 on in my mixing container for a whole day. Came back home and the water was 95deg. Talk about hot.

Hey Greg- what wattage does the mag 18 run at? I have a mak4 I could use externally =)
Charles, the Mag 18 will draw less than the 130 watts that the Mag 24 draws on the EV 400, so it should be less than the MAK 4. I would first try the mag18 andif you are not happy try the MAK 4. It is arecommended pump for the EV400 so you should probably close off the air valve to keep the skimmer from overflowing. If you have problems, call me. Because the mag draws much less wattage under a pressure application, it will not get nearly as hot as it will running wide open.

I have an EV-1000 with a MAG and I can't believe how much junk it pulls out. It's a crap magnet!

I have determined that the best thing you can do is ensure that there is no back pressure on the output of the skimmer. (Where the gate valve is)

You mentioned that when you sump level fluctuates that you get variable skimming, this is due to back pressure, which will effect the skimming column.

If it is possible to lift your skimmer a couple of inches above your water level, you will get more consistent skimming output.

You may need a more powerful pump, too.
