aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

I lucked out when a reefer on another forum decided to go with another skimmer. He had one that was brand new and still in the box. I just dropped it in the tank a few hours ago.

cool

let us know how it progresses!

I heard back from Larry Jones from aquamaxx about the delays and for those who have been patiently waiting for shipments, here is his reply.

Thank you for your email. We have had a much higher than anticipated demand for our products, which can be a good thing, but obviously this has put us behind in keeping up with that demand. We have a couple of shipments that should be hitting our distributor starting in about 2-3 weeks.

Between the delay in sourcing some of the parts (like the pumps we modify), building the units while not sacrificing the quality of the build and shipping this has set us back a bit. We are hoping over the next one to two months that we will be caught up with everything. My supervisors are having meetings with the manufacturering people this week to get updates on how things are progressing.

We on the sales and tech support side are just as frustrated as the people who are waiting for our products. Hopefully everything will be caught up very soon and everyone will have our products on their shelves again to sell.

If there is anything else we can do please let us know and thank you for your kind words and patience.

Larry Jones
AquaMaxx Tech Support

Not much new but from reading this and talking with others, I get the impression that getting the pumps has been one of the biggest issues.

Does anyone knows what's the size of the drain plug for these guys?
Been trying to look for a hose of the same size but couldn't seem to find. I've tried 12/16 Ehiem hoses but they don't seem to fit snugly.

I think it's around 10mm off the base of the cup (if thats what you are referring to). the hose itself is slightly bigger than the sleeve off the cup. Hence the zip tie included.

For anyone interested in the latest shipment news, I corresponded with Larry @ aquamaxx and he said there is a big shipment coming in this weekend (monday at the latest) to U.S. distributors. So we should be seeing them on shelves again by next week.

BTW, Skimmer is still working great!!

I dont give it much thought anymore since it is worry free. After all, isn't that what a skimmer is supposed to do? (no fiddle, no fuss!)

Soooooo, bought the C0-1 last month while I was planning for a 54 corner tank. Plans changed (of course) now have a 120 (4x2x2) coming. Now ...... is the C0-1 going to be undersized based on your experience? It hasn't even seen water yet!

Unfortunately Yes!

It will be undersized and will most likely never idle.

It will be fine for the interim while the tank is cycling but when you start getting it stocked you will need a bigger skimmer.

I wouldn't worry because it will sell fast on the used good forums. If you can return it that would be ideal though.

CO-3 would be good if you are going to stock the system well.

CO-2 would work too but less air at just over 700lph

Figured as much! Since they are so hard to get right now I might try to sell locally or just lose the 25 bucks to ship to someone and go for the right sized.

that would be a good move.

I asked the rep (Larry Jones) at Aquamaxx about the major delay again and he replied back today saying they expect their big shipment this weekend or Monday at the latest. So hopefully the 1, 2, 3 and EM's will all be back in stock by end of next week. We'll see though! They've said that before!

Hang in there and Happy Reefing

I also just bought a 4'x2'x2' 120g and was planning on using the CO-1 because the specs say it's rated for up to 175g systems. Why would it not work for a 120g DT with a 30-35g sump?

Sorry for the late reply
their 175 gal rating is generous IMO and that would be if you were going FOWLR. A six to eight inch body and 750 to 1000+lph would be much more efficient and allow you flexibility with stocking levels. The larger body and increased air will allow a better range of tunability on the skimmer. The co1 may work but most likely would just continue skimming all the time without idle.

Since I already have, I am going to give it a go. Running Zeovit so like to dry skim anyway..... we will see and go from there. In the past, I have been guilty of over skimming imo (SWC250A running askoll pump on a 150g idled over 50% of time)

I dose carbon (NOPOX). 2.5 ml daily and the CO 1 sure is a good dry-skimmer.

Nice thick, smelly, dark goop!!!

It will do well on a zeo system. Wish I had mine when I used to run zeovit

I asked Aquamaxx about this and got a response from Larry right away. He said he would have no problem using either the Co-1 or 2 in a 120g if it were his tank but it comes down to some other factors as well. One of those factors being room in the sump for the larger footprint of the CO-2. Also, he did say that if I had the room in my sump, the CO-2 may be a better option if I planned on having tank more heavily stocked (like you said). He also said that the CO-2 may be more inconsistent in a tank of my size when it is less stocked.

I think to be safe, I'm going to move up to the CO-2 so that I don't have to worry about whether my tank is stocked above what the skimmer can appropriately handle.

sounds good

Larry at Aquamaxx is super responsive. These skimmers will skim a much smaller tank than the specs indicate (example would be my little 39 DT/15 gl sump). I wouldn't worry too much about the CO2 being inconsistent at first. Remember you dont want a super clean tank while it's cycling anyways. It will only slow the nitrogen cycle time, so skimming isn't really critical until you start adding your prized pieces.

LOL-don't expect this during your cycle.
