aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

Love it! Great little review! As far as the silencer pulling in water, if you go to home Depot, bring the silencer cap with you and go to the plumbing hardware section. You'll find small packs of o rings cheap. You can just drop one in the recessed section of the silencer flange and screw down the cap. No water in my silencer at all. I run my co 1 at 9 3/4.

Your skim looks tasty

happy reefing

The silencer comes apart? Do I just pull it off? I'm asking before I attempt it because I don't want to break it.

Unless something has changed since I bought mine, the black set screw can be removed and the top portion of the silencer will come off with a twist. You can just take the top portion to the hardware store and size up an oring with the diameter of the cap.
There would be no other reason for that set screw, other than to hold the assembly together.

Hope that helps

Just a note for those considering maybe jumping up to the CO-2 size. It doesn't have the slanted exit/ramp in the cup, just your standard cylinder like a lot of skimmers. And the silencer is mounted much higher up by the collection cup so its well out of danger of flooding. Much bigger footprint though.

I have a SWC-150 BMK on my 65g right now and lately it does not seem to want to produce very dry skimmate like it used to. Also, it sometimes is having trouble holding a good foam head. How do you think the CO-1 would do on my 65g? Any guesses why my SWC isn't pulling skimmate like it used to?

+1 on the cleaning

Also, you may have salt/carbonate build up at the intake venturi. That is an easy fix if you dont think you need to clean the whole skimmer. Couple things to do; 1) disconnect the air line from the silencer and while the skimmer is running you can hold the air line in a cup of hot RO water and let it pull the hot water through the line until the cup is empty (repeat if necessary). If that doesn't help you may have heavier blockage. 2) would be to get to the pump and volute. Either pull the skimmer or leave it if you can safely remove the volute cover. Once you get to the cover, you can take off the air line at the nipple on the pump volute and inspect it to see if there is crud built up. If there is and the hot water didn't work you can use a paper clip or blunt end of a drill bit to push out the obstruction. Once cleared you should reassemble and run hot RO through it again. If you have to remove the whole skimmer to get to it then consider doing a good cleaning of the pump volute and magnet well and clean the cup/neck. I don't recommend cleaning/scrubbing the inner body of the skimmer unless it has a lot of build up. If it looks decent then I would leave it alone because deep cleaning removes the slime coat and the skimmer will take longer to settle back in.

Have you cleaned it at all? I soak mine once in a while in a vinegar bath, works wonders.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I have tried all of that over the last 6-weeks. I was wondering if it just needed to re-break in, but it seems like it should have happened by now.

Slime coat should have re-developed by now

are you running the mesh/hybrid impeller? Maybe the mesh has fragmented or loosened. Could also be the atman pump losing it's mojo.

I dont have much faith in Atman pumps since I've gone through a few with some old BM skimmers.

Hmmm...maybe I will pull the pump and inspect it.

take a look at impeller. If it's the mesh/hybrid, the cage that surrounds the mesh has a tendency to crack on occasion. If that happens then the mesh can loosen and potentialy fragment. Also inspect the magnet and look for any swelling. If it is spotty looking or swollen, it will effect the pump performance.

for what it's worth, I was just told by Michael at aquarium specialty that they have CO 1's in stock NOW.

Good luck all!

I hope that's not the case because I specifically contacted them this a.m. and Michael replied back stating they were IN STOCK. I've got a few people that are itching for the CO1 and have been patiently waiting. We'll see
