aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

So do you guys think it would be worth getting the JNS version considering they do not offer a warranty in the US? I'm all for saving $$ just want to make sure it doesn't come back and bite me. Thanks

I am grateful I bought my CO1 from a dealer to help with warranty issues. I would be out of a skimmer otherwise.

I would absolutely make sure I had warranty on a skimmer I bought.

Going on just over two months with the JNS version of this skimmer, and I just can't get it to do much besides pull watery skim and make the neck dirty. Skimmer is sitting in about 9.5" of water. If I run the water too low in the skimmer, I get nothing but a dirty neck. If I raise it up past where the skimmer attaches, I get about 1" of watery light brown skimmate in about 4-5 days. Any higher than that, and it overflows. This is in a 7 year old tank with some large corals, 5 fish, 4 shrimp and 3 good sized emerald crabs. Not heavily stocked, but still a decent bioload.

People that are getting nice skim in smaller tanks, are you dosing a carbon source or something? The only thing I can think is that the neck on this is just too large for my bioload, and I'm not getting a consistent foam head.

Isn't that good news? Now you can get more fish! :-)

But, honestly it sounds like you are having problems adjusting it. I think you have enough bioload just gotta get it set right.

So I checked the tank before work this morning and found my skimmer pump not working. It sounded like something was stuck in the impeller. I took it apart and nothing was stuck and the impeller appeared perfectly fine. I put back together with the same results...It sounds like it is struggling. I tried uplugging several times and somtimes it starts to pump water and other times it just hummms. Any suggestions? New impeller or do you think its a bad pump? I have never had any issues up until this point. Skimmer was purchased new in February.

After taking the pump apart again I found that the impeller was slipping on the shaft and actually came right off. I am assuming that the impeller is not supposed to move on the shaft. A couple drops of super glue later and we are back up and running for the time being. I am going to contact supplier in regards to a replacement.

Wow, great thread. I've been running a JNS CO-1 for about a month now in my 100gal system w/ 30gal sump that is just finishing cycling. It hasn't been producing any skimmate no matter how I set it. Wasn't too concerned since there was no bioload. But now with some cyano growing, a small bioload and me feeding a bit, I figure it should be pulling SOMETHING. Fiddling with it last night I discovered that there is water leaking out where the reactor chamber meets the base plate (in pic below, I'm holding skimmer up so the leak is more visible). Is this normal? Or is this why I'm not getting any skimmate? I tried reseating it a few times to try and get a better seal, but it doesn't seem to help. Screws are tightened as much as I want to tighten them before breaking something (well more than finger tight). Any ideas? Oh, I have it in 8" of water right now. Based on what I've seen here, I'll raise water level to 9.5" and see what happens. But still, is the leaking normal?

Water should not be leaking out. When you attach the skimmer body to the base, make sure to align the keyhole slot so that there is no spot to allow water out. If you over turn the base in the slot, there is a gap and will allow water thru. Understand? kinda hard to explain.

Yep, I get ya. Pretty sure there's no gap where the keyhole slot is. More so seems like the skimmer body does not seat properly in the grooves on the top of the base, so water's escaping along the semi-circular edge where they come together and don't quite fit together properly. I'll try it again this evening and be extra extra careful with alignment.

The exact same thing happened to me during setup. The alignment was slightly off, very hard to see, but water level in skimmer wouldn't rise. Finally got it seated properly, and yes, I too almost tightened the screws too much. Working like a champ now.

I have the same problem. I have spent the last couple of months trying different depths for the skimmer and still am not getting anywhere. I am starting to think my tank is just not dirty enough for the skimmer and it is over skimming.

Got mine to seat right, and big difference! Was able to dial it way back and get foam up to where cup meets neck. Now to see if I can get a nice and nasty skimmate...

Just got my JNS CO-1 today and all I can say is wow. For all the complaints about chinese made products the build quality on this is great. It makes my current skimmer (SC 301 ... NAC 3.5 knock off) seem like a toy.

My main question is how long did the break in period take for people? I have heard that it has a fairly quick break in period but should I still run it in a bucket of water and vinegar for a couple hours to assist in the break in period?

break in will vary based on load and feeding habits.

could be a week, could be a month+

It's fine to run it in a vinegar soltn. FWIW, I've seen no difference in break in time between running in vinegar and just using a hot water scrub on my skimmers.

save some skim from your old skimmer if you can. A few drops down the neck of a new skimmer while it's running speeds things up considerably.

happy reefing!

Thanks for the reply. Would it be better to put water change water into a bucket with the skimmer and add some skimmate from my skimmer in there? I just don't want to wait a month till my skimmer starts doing something.

thats fine

scrub the skimmer with a brush though. production residues may remain a little longer if it's not scrubbed and only run in water.

I have a question about the fitting about the tube that adjust the flow into the chamber. For some reason mine will not stay down and as I run it it pops out of the elbow. Am I missing something?

edit

Ok wow I'm dumb. Figured it out....
