aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

Yea I replied from my phone so it was short. But anyway I have mine on two 2'x2' frag tanks with a 20 gallon sump. so we are talking about 50 gallons total and it works great on it..
Thanks for your help. I was a little worried it would be too big for my bio load. I will let you know how it works when I get it installed.

hey everyone, when you clean the collection cup, are you turning the skimmer off? I have tried both turning the skimmer off and adjusting the valve to drop the water level, but each time i have a difficult time tuning the water level to produce skimmate... sometime i even end up with a collection cup full of regular water...

is anyone else having this issue? any advice would help

@preefered.
Based on my one month of used, i had a similar problem and it was very frustrating. However, I found out that after cleaning the the collection cup i just let the valve open wider than i normally would. This way it will prevent overflowing in the collection cup w/regullar water. Also if U notice that every time u turn on the skimmer ull get a mini break-in-cycle. once u notice the cycle is done and ur skimmer is producing bubbles the way it should be, then just close the valve to ur desire level that u want. Hope this helps =)

This is what my 10 days of skimming looks like. Just took a pic today.

I never turn mine off to clean the cup unless I'm doing a full body cleaning.

If you get overflow when you clean the cup (skimmer still running) then I would suggest removing the plug from the drain tube for a few minutes until it settles down, then plug it back up. adjusting the skimmer each time the cup is cleaned will affect the rebound of the skimmer and only frustrate you. Once I get a skimmer adjusted to skim the way I like, I never adjust it again. If it is acting weird it usually is always because it is in need of some sort of cleaning (not adjustment).

Hey Guys. I have not made a post in a while, but I recently ran into an issue with my CO-1. I was moving my tank 9 hours away (worst day ever) and somehow I broke something small on my CO-1. It is one of the hard acrylic tubes that are inside what I believe is called the silencer. It is the one that the airline attaches to, but it is only broken on the inside of the silencer at the base. How will this affect the performance? Any suggestions for method of repair?

is it a break that is in pieces? or is it a break that can be glued?

I snapped off my acrylic nipple at the venturi on mine (being stupid with pliers). It actually snapped off inside between the intake opening and the outer edge of the venturi. Scared the heck out of me but I grabbed some crazy glue and pressed it back in and it's never been an issue. If yours can be lined back up and set back together then I would suggest crazy glue. If you just leave it alone, it shouldn't hinder performance so I wouldn't worry.

Thanks buddy. The piece actually somehow went MIA. I was thinking if it did affect performance I could get an acrylic tube of a larger diameter and glue it over the broken piece.

no problem :p

you could always do the tube mod like you mention. For a while I ran mine without the silencer and it performed fine. I now prefer the silencer. Not because it made it more silent, but because I believe it keeps my intake clearer. I get a little build up at the inside base on mine, that I believe is both salt and dust which would otherwise enter the tube and potentially gunk things up. I find that I'm checking my venturi less frequently with the silencer on than off. When it was off I would lose a bit of air intake volume after several weeks due to the venturi getting a little build up.

Yea I bought mine used and that piece broke on the outside during shipping. They do not have a piece to fix it and they dont sell a silencer because it is attached.. Design flaw to me. I run mine without because it is in the basement so noise is no issue. I tried everywhere to buy the tubing for it but know one sells it in thinwall.

Before I put the skimmer back online after the move I gave it a serious vinegar bath and cleaning. Now I can not keep it from overflowing even with the adjustment wide open...ugh.

Open up the stand pipe all the way and re-adjust.. Allot of times over time the venturi will clog with calcium overtime and produce less air making you have to close the stand pipe some.. By giving it a vinegar bath that probably unclogged and now is producing more air.

Maybe you put the pump together wrong.

If it is and it still overflows you may have something in your water that messed with the surface tension.

remove the cup for a few hours and just let it run. Vinegar baths will remove most if not all the slime coat and they will go berzerk for a while.

You may have some micros in the tank for a bit but it should settle down much quicker if the cup is off. Also, Like Shred 5 mentioned, double check the air line nipple on the venturi and look inside for blockage. MAy need to be reamed and cleaned out..

Checking in after 4 months with the CO-1. Mine took a couple weeks to really settle in (I had a lower bioload at that point), but has since been the most reliable small skimmer I've ever owned... and I've tried at least 10 different types over the years.

No microbubbles, no adjustments ever needed, great skimmate. For what it's worth, I'm running mine in water right up to the bottom of the silencer, and the water level is set about an inch below the neck connection.

+1 I never adjust my skimmer when I clean the cup

Been running my skimmer for a week now. So far so good. My skim looks just like post #913. Really quite too. I'm running it at 9.5" of water. I bought the JNS model. I have a 50 gal. cube with about a 15 gal. sump.
