AQUARIUM FAN CHILLER question

there to be used without a glass top, you blow air directly on the surface of the water to create evaporation, you'd be best using it with an ato

I'd ditch the galss top. It doesn't help with your heat problem and is not good for oxygenation. Yes these fans work very well. But as VacavilleFC3s said, you should look into getting an ATO. You will have lots of evaporation and on a small tank, your salinity will fluctuate a lot. Point the fans on the surface of the water.

I have mine plugged in a Ranco dual stage controller(heater in the other plug) and my temp always stays the same even in very high heat.

The glass top keeps the water spatter/mist form hitting my floor & Light (I have A-LOT of water agitation)

Can anyone recommend an affordable chiller or another way to cool it down?, I just need to drop 3-4 degrees.

also if I aim a fan at the light would that help?

Sorry to ask so much but I'm a n00b.

Thanks so much.

Fans + ATO = glory for that kind of temp change. Have them on a timer with the lights and usually have them go another 30min-1hr after the lights go out just to get rid of residual heat. I used the azoo brand, not the link above but if it clips on and is a fan then it should work good.

You can try the Aqua Euro USA Mighty Pro CL Chiller 24-Gallon Size for $200.

Mixed reviews about the unit though. Buy it from a reputable place in case you decide to return it.

Try Fans first and then if it doesn't work buy a chiller. The fans will definitely increase the evaporation through.

If you arent going to remove the glass top, then you cant fan cool the actual tank to take advantage of evaporative cooling so they wont cause any evaporation. A fan that vents the heat away from the light will help a little but it probably isnt going to solve your problem.

If you are using an open top sump, you can use a fan to blow air across the surface of the water in the sump. That will help and you will have some added evaporation from it. I too would use and ATO system of some kind if you have a sump, whether you end up taking advantage of evaporative cooling or not.

82 degrees is actually tolerable. There are reefers with successful tanks that are running warmer than that.

BTW ... it's "cute" how the ad in the link calls the fans a "chiller" when all that they are, are clip/clamp on fans.

Everyone ignores this when I bring it up but crossflow fans are signifigantly more effective than round fans for evaporative cooling. They cant always be used though for aesthetics reasons.

I use a single fan on my 34 gal solana and Im here in the desert in Las Vegas NV. The single fan keeps my tank at 80 deg pretty consistently. But like everyone else, I strongly recommend getting an ATO because I have to top off the tank manually every day. ATO is definitely my next investment.
