Most of the rocks (including the ones I used as base) came from my old tank. I started with them as dry rocks and turned them back into dry rocks after a year long battle with caulerpa.
When I first set up my old tank I loved the texture of the rocks as well! I think within 6 months or so you could barely see the nice rocks anymore. I have a lot of large gorgos and encrusting stuff, large sun coral colonies, etc. They all tend to grow over.
It is a shame to bury so much nice rock under sand but I liked the stability. The flat wide base was perfect and I think the jawfish will be worth it.
